Tuesday, March 5, 2019 Meeting Minutes
Present: Cary Davidson, Charlotte Gollnick, Kelly Gordon, Jan Jensen, Patricia Judd, Kelley

I. Call to Order
a. Call to Order – Chair Kuhlman at 4:35 PM.
b. Approval of minutes – Chair Kuhlman asked for a motion to approve the minutes from
the January 8, 2019 Arts Commission meeting. Commissioner Jensen moved that the
minutes be accepted as written. Commissioner Leighty seconded the motion. Chair
Kuhlman called the vote, and the motion passed unanimously.
c. Introductions – Chair Kuhlman thanked members of Auburn Valley Creative Arts
(AVCA) for hosting the meeting in their temporary gallery space at 1231 A St. NE.
Kuhlman then welcomed the Arts Commission and gave a special welcome to newly
appointed Arts Commissioners: Pat Judd, Kelly Gordon and Pam Smith. After a brief
introduction of the new Commissioners, Kuhlman invited those present to introduce
themselves to the group.
d. Business of interest - Arts & Recreation Director, Daryl Faber related an incident that
occurred during the recent snow event in Auburn. The Seahorse sculpture that is
currently on display in Auburn’s Downtown Sculpture Gallery had been knocked from its
display plinth. It has been repaired and reinstalled.
II. Sister Cities Presentation
a) Kalyn Brady, Sister Cities Liaison for the City of Auburn introduced herself, and gave an
overview of the Sister Cities program. After answering questions from Commissioners,
Brady noted that an opening exists for a liaison from the Arts Commission to the Sister
Cities Association. Commissioner Leighty volunteered to be the liaison. Brady distributed
flyers about the program and welcomed other commissioners to join as well. Discussion
followed about the potential for art exchanges with Auburn’s Sister Cities in the future.
III. 4Culture Survey
a. Arts Coordinator Hyde distributed a demographics questionnaire from King County’s
cultural funding agency, 4Culture. Because the City of Auburn receives grant funds
through 4Culture, we are required to provide this information from our staff and board
annually. Commissioners completed the forms and provided them to Hyde.
IV. Auburn Valley Creative Arts Presentation
a. Ronie Schwend from Auburn Valley Creative Arts (AVCA) welcomed Arts
Commissioners to the temporary AVCA Gallery at The Villas at Auburn. Schwend gave
a presentation about AVCA’s current membership and programming. Arts
Commissioners commented on the gallery and provided feedback regarding
organizations that provide grant opportunities to non-profits and suggested marketing
strategies that might increase the community’s awareness of AVCA’s programming.
V. News and Updates
a. Arts & Culture Center – Manager Krueger informed the commission that interior
demolition work is underway at the Arts & Culture Center in preparation for updates that
need to be made. Demolition will be funded by a portion of the 4Culture grant funding
that is set to expire. Krueger noted that staff has completed and submitted funding
requests for the Arts & Culture Center to the State of Washington’s through their
Member Requested Local Community Project program. Senate and House. The
request has the support of both Representative Pat Sullivan and Senator Mona Das.
b. Auburn Arts Alley – Krueger informed commissioners about the recently submitted
grant request to 4Culture for the Creative Consultancies program in collaboration with
artist Kathleen Frugé Brown. The City is committed to infrastructure improvements
including resurfacing the asphalt, installing benches, fixtures and bollards, etc. If
successful, the grant would provide funding for artistic elements of alley improvement.
c. Crow with Fries – Arts Coordinator Hyde gave an update on the progress of the iconic
sculpture, Crow with Fries, commissioned by the City. Hyde announced a studio visit to
the studio of artist, Peter Reiquam, which has been arranged for March 14th. Hyde
invited the commissioners to attend. Krueger announced a special event to celebrate
the installation of the iconic sculpture “Crow with Fries” which will take place on a
“Fryday” at the end of May or early June. Hyde announced a themed art exhibition
about crows which will be curated by artist, Greg Bartol. The exhibition will potentially
include a presentation by guest speaker, Dr. John Marzluff of the University of
Washington College of the Environment, an expert in all things crow. More details to
follow.
d. Utility Box Wraps and Mural – Hyde announced an upcoming call to artists for
submissions for utility box wraps, and a mural to be sited in Auburn. Funding for this
artistic improvement and graffiti abatement opportunity is in conjunction with the city’s
Code Enforcement Department.
e. Auburn School District High School Art Exhibition – Hyde announced the art
exhibition currently on display at the Auburn Community & Event Center gallery. Arts
Commissioners were encouraged to volunteer to jury the works for awards to be given
at the Closing Reception on April 3, 2019 from 5-6:30pm. Commissioner Davidson, who
organized the high school art exhibition, will try to arrange a small musical
accompaniment for the evening. Hyde further encouraged Commissioners to attend the
event to show students the value our community places on their work.
f. Calls to Artists – Hyde noted two current calls to artists closing soon. The calls for
submissions to the Downtown Sculpture Gallery and the Mary Olson Farm Artist in
Residency program will be closing on March 19th, 2019. Commissioners can expect an
email from Hyde about jurying the calls before the next meeting on April 2, 2019.
g. MOFAIR artist Michelle Lassaline Exhibition at WRVM – Hyde announced the
upcoming exhibition of works by the inaugural Mary Olson Farm Artist in Residence
artist Michelle Lassaline at White River Valley Museum in June. Details to follow.
h. BRAVO season – The latest BRAVO Performing Arts season postcard was distributed.
Krueger mentioned the current production, The Music Man, at the Auburn Avenue
Theater and encouraged commissioners to attend. Krueger also updated
commissioners on the need to reschedule a performance by the Golden Dragon
Acrobats at the Performing Arts Center due to a cancellation during the recent snow
event. The Golden Dragon Acrobats will be performing at the Auburn Performing Arts
Center (PAC) on Sunday, May 19th, 2019.
i. Art Classes — Hyde announced upcoming art classes through the Arts department:
Native American Style Hand Drum workshop on March 20111, followed by Native
American Style Hand Drum Painting on March 27th both being taught by Greg Watson;
and Pysanky I - Ukrainian Easter Eggs on March 23rd, followed by Pysanky II -
Ukrainian Easter Eggs on March 30th taught by Susan Blubaugh.
j. Thanks — Hyde and Krueger thanked those in attendance and AVCA for hosting the
meeting and for their presentation.
VI. Adjourn
a. There being no further business, Commissioner Leighty moved to adjourn the meeting,
Commissioner Jensen seconded the motion, Chair Kuhlman called the vote, the motion
passed. The meeting adjourned at 5:56 PM.
