I. Call to Order
a. Call to Order – Chair Leighty called the online zoom meeting to order at 4:45 PM.
b. Introduction and welcome by Chair Leighty once a quorum was reached in the online meeting.
c. Approval of minutes –Chair Leighty requested that a correction be made to section I. C; 2. C &
3. C. of the May 2020 minutes to correct “Vice-Chair Leighty” to “Chair Leighty.” Without further
comments or edits. Commissioner Harris moved that the minutes for May 28 be accepted as
amended. Commissioner Gordon seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
II. 2021 Gallery Selections
a. Arts Coordinator Allison Hyde presented the top rated artist applications from the online jurying
completed by a panel of artists, community members, staff and Arts Commissioners. Hyde
brought to the Commission’s attention that two changes would be different this year, including:
the change of all three city gallery spaces to have six shows per year at two months each, and
that we would be selecting less new artists for exhibitions than usual due to rescheduling those
from 2020 that were not possible due to building closures from the COVID 19 pandemic.
Commissioners reviewed top rated and recommended artist applications for each gallery and
then the alternates, including new artists: Roxanne Everett, Cindy Shebley, Joseph Kraham,
Ted Rigoni, a Senior Center Student Artist Exhibition, Nikole Dixon, and Joseph Stitts.
Alternates for the 2021 Galleries will include: Judith Rayl, Trisha Hall, Marion Lee Jamieson,
and Deborah Singer.
b. Commissioner Gordon motioned to approve the artists and alternates recommended for art
exhibitions for the 2021 art galleries. Commissioner Dwight seconded the motion. Motion
passed unanimously.
III. 2021 Art on Main Selections
a. Arts Coordinator Allison Hyde presented the top rated artist applications from the online jurying
completed by a panel of artists, community members, staff and Arts Commissioners. Hyde
noted that like the galleries, there had been one artist whose exhibition was rescheduled to
2021 due to COVID 19, so the Arts Commission would be selecting three new art exhibitions
instead of the usual four. Hyde presented the top two rated artists from the jury process for the
first two of three spots: artists Susan Woolfe and Jay Lazerwitz.
b. Commissioner Gordon moved to approve recommended artists Susan Woolfe and Jay
Lazerwitz for 2021 Art on Main exhibitions. Commissioner Harris seconded the motion. Motion
passed unanimously.
c. Arts Coordinator Hyde then presented the following three artists with equally rated scores from
the jury process to choose from for the third of three exhibitions: artists Susan Vander Kooi,
Lenore Wan and Carol Williams. After discussion, the Commission recommend to select Carol
Williams for the third exhibition and the other two artist for alternate positions.
d. Commissioner Sprague moved to select Carol Williams as an artist for the 2021 Art on Main
exhibitions, with the other two artists as potential alternates if needed. Commissioner Harris
seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
II. Downtown Sculpture Gallery People’s Choice
a. Arts Coordinator Hyde announced that Abe Singer’s sculpture titled “Reflection” had won the
annual People’s Choice award with 699 of 997 total votes, and receive a $500 award. It was
also mentioned that in future years a new form would be used that would allow each device, a
phone, computer or tablet to only vote once.
III. Updates and News
a. Auburn Arts Alley – Arts Coordinator Hyde and Arts & Events Manager Julie Krueger
highlighted recent developments in the Auburn Arts Alley project, noting that the cast concrete
sitting wall had been completed and Kathleen Fruge Brown’s mosaics installed. Staff also gave
some brief background information about the artist’s process and artistic inspirations from
many Coast Salish basket and textile weaving patterns and collaborations with talented textile
artist Gail White Eagle from the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe. Krueger discussed progress being
quickly made of the mural by artists Will Schlough also, and how the design feedback from the
Arts Commission had helped to fine-tune the final design which the artist is in the process of
painting. Some details of the overall timeline and process like the telephone pole removal and
asphalt overlay that are to come later were also discussed.
b. F Street Bridge Mural - Arts & Events Manager Julie Krueger informed the Arts Commission
that artist Nick Goettling was hard at work finishing the second side of his F Street Bridge
mural, and is anticipated to finish in the next two weeks.
IV. Adjourn
There being no further business, Commissioner Gordon moved to adjourn the meeting,
Commissioner Harris seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. The meeting adjourned
at 5:39 PM.
Respectfully submitted, Allison Hyde
