MINUTES
I. CALL TO ORDER
Chair Isaiah Johnson, called the meeting to order at 3:47 P.M. in the City of
Auburn Conference Room 3 located on the second floor of City Hall, 25 W . Main
Street, Auburn WA. Committee members present were: Nancy Colson and
Ronnie Beyersdorf. Staff members present included: Director of HR & Risk
Management, Candis Martinson, Compensation/Employee Relations Manager,
Aaron Barber, and Human Resources Assistant, Jean Sumers.
II. DISCUSSION
The Commission started the conversation discussing previous Committee
members commitments to serve. Even though their commitment is officially over,
because we have not replaced them, are they expected to remain active until
they are replaced? Terry Hurlbut may still live in the area and, per Candis, she
would discuss further with the City Attorney, Steve Gross. Also, Candis informed
the Commission of a potential candidate to replace one of the open positions.
This meeting was to discuss both the City Councilmembers salaries as well as
the Mayor’s salary and decide if those salaries should be adjusted. Aaron
provided Mayor and Councilmembers’ Salary/Benefit comparison data to
analyze Auburn with several other cities with a population of fifty percent (50%)
above and below Auburn’s population. Aaron explained the CPI comparisons
and said the City is projecting a potential 3% increase for Unaffiliated employees
in 2020. As for the Mayor’s salary, the commission agreed that the Mayor
supervises people that earn more than she does. Ronnie stated that he attended
the Mayor’s address to the City, she did a great job projecting her vision for the
City. Ronnie suggests that her effective leadership and her performance need to
be rewarded and Isaiah and Nancy agreed. Isaiah stated that the Mayor has
been very welcoming to all people in Auburn, all races and ethnicities , and it
shows.
It was moved by Ronnie to approve a three percent (3%) salary increase for the
Councilmembers with an effective date of June 1st, 2019, seconded by Nancy. It
was voted and approved unanimously 3/0. The increase equals thirty eight
dollars and fifty eight cents ($38.58) per month. It was also moved by Ronnie to
approve a four and a half percent (4.5%) salary increase for the Mayor effective
January 1st, 2020, seconded by Nancy. Voted and approved unanimously 3/0.
