SEEKING A SPECIAL MEMBER
FOR THE AUBURN LANDMARKS COMMISSION
The City of Auburn is committed to preserving and protecting places that reflect significant elements of
our local, regional and national heritage. Working in partnership with King County’s Historic
Preservation Program, the City of Auburn strives to foster civic pride in the beauty and accomplishments
of the past, stabilize and improve the economic value and vitality of landmarks by providing incentives
for preservation and rehabilitation, and promote heritage-related tourism.
Toward this end, the City of Auburn is seeking a volunteer to serve as a special member of the King
County Landmarks Commission. The King County Landmarks Commission is composed of nine members.
The Auburn special member to the commission serves as a tenth member when the commission acts on
behalf of Auburn for all business conducted within the city. Interested candidates must reside in Auburn
and have a demonstrated interest in historic preservation. Candidates should also be familiar with quasi-
judicial proceedings.
The Auburn special member to the King County Landmarks Commission is appointed by the Auburn City
Council to serve a three-year term. The special commissioner may be reappointed but may not serve
more than two consecutive, three-year terms. All Landmarks Commission positions are voluntary, and
members serve without compensation.
The King County Landmarks Commission meets in the late afternoon on the 4th Thursday of each
month. Meetings are held primarily over Zoom, with occasional in-person meetings held in one of the 24
cities with which the county has a contract to provide preservation services, including Auburn. The
Auburn special commissioner is responsible for the attending commission meetings only when Auburn
business is before the commission (these meetings may or may not be held in Auburn when in person
meetings are scheduled, depending on other business being conducted). Special commissioners can
also expect to attend occasional site visits, tours and training workshops each year.
Auburn special commissioner responsibilities include:
• Reviewing and deciding nominations for landmark designation in Auburn
• Reviewing and deciding certificates of appropriateness for alterations to or demolition of
landmark properties in Auburn
• Attending occasional site visits and/or tours of historic properties in Auburn
• Participating in periodic training workshops around the county
