V.D IS C US S I O N AND I NF O RM AT IO N A .S ound Transit Presentation Page 1 of 3 S ound Transit representative L ucille Chide introduced artists Sam Obrovac and Ryan F eddersen, and explained the collaboration process between S ound Transit and various public artists. During the construction process for new transit infrastructure, artists are selected to provide design concepts and Sound Transit holds the responsibility to fabricate and implement artwork in the finished infrastructure. The A uburn S ounder Garage, approved by voters in 2008 and estimated to open in 2027, will prominently display a Muckleshoot design created by the artist Sam Obrovac. Obrovac was selected and on board since 2023 to work in tandem with the development of the garage. Upon the opaque and semi-opaque glass of the elevator tower will be a "story pole," created with themes of transmission, waterways, and traditional means of transportation. Central S alish artist Ryan F eddersen introduced the A uburn Retrofit P roject. A t the A uburn Transit station, 72 glass panels will be replaced with art glass designed by F eddersen to be installed in J uly 2024. E ach section upon each canopy will represent different Northwest plants and their relationship to people, and are inspired by beadwork, patterns, and I nterior S alish history. V I .AC T IO N I T E M S A .P roject S upport Grant A llison Hyde gives context to the commission on the Doors Open initiative. S ustained S upport funding, provided by 4Culture, consistently funded the grants supplied by the City of Auburn. W ith Doors Open, non-profit businesses previously funded by grants through the City of A uburn and other institutions could now apply to be directly funded by Doors Open. The City of A uburn proposes that we support the efforts of non-profit businesses by directing them to 4culture to utilize their resources and receive funding for their programs. Motion to discontinue the Project Support Grant as it currently exists made by Rocky S alvador, seconded by Dinah Rau. B .I ndividual A rtist Support Hyde discusses the impact eliminating the P roject S upport Grant will have on individual artists, who are not eligible for Doors Open funding yet, and suggests the commission consider the idea of repurposing a portion of those 4Culture Sustained Support funds once used for the Project Support Grants to create a new grant opportunity to specifically fund individual artist projects that benefit the City of Auburn community. Depending on the number of and feasibility of applicants that apply annually, there may be more flexibility to keep arts funding fluid for other programs such as artist in residence, public art projects, and other art-based programming. City arts staff recommended the Arts Commission consider creating an Page 2 of 3 individual artist support grant with an annual donation maximum of $2,500 for the first year, with grants typically in the award amount of $500-$1,000. Commission Chair Chris Olds requests a motion to approve the creation of this new opportunity. Trisenda Mayfield motions; Tori Olsen seconds. A ll approve.
