MINUTES
WASHINGTON September 25, 2017
I. CALL TO ORDER
The Human Services Committee meeting was called to order by Committee member
Barbara Derda Berry at 4:00 pm on Monday, September 25, 2017 at 25 West Main
Street, Auburn, WA
Committee Members present: Barbara Derda, Dana Riel,JoAnne Walters, Lela Brugger, Maryelyn
Scholz
Absent: Jason Berry, Leticia Figueroa
Staff present: Human Services Program Coordinator Emily Pearson
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
• Member Lela Brugger moved to accept the June 26, 2017 meeting minutes; Member
Maryelyn Scholz seconded the motion. All committee members were in favor of
adopting the minutes as submitted.
The June 26, 2017 meeting minutes were approved.
III. AGENDA
• Transitions
Emily Pearson announced to the group that recent transitions had taken place within
the Community Services Division. Erica Azcueta's last day with the City was
September 1, 2017. A job posting was put on the City's website seeking applicants.
A new Human Services Manager has been offered the position; that employee will
start on October 16, 2017.
• Ray of Hope Resource Center
The Ray of Hope Resource Center, made possible by a partnership between The
Auburn Food Bank, Valley Cities Counseling & Consultation and the City of Auburn,
opened at the end of August. The center's hours of operation are Monday— Friday,
10:00 am —3:30 pm. They hope to eventually be open 7 days a week. It can hold up
to 35 occupants during open hours. Outreach workers will be onsite to help patrons
navigate the resources available to them. The shelter will be on the Valley Cities
property for approximately 18 months while plans are put in place for more
permanent, supportive and affordable housing options for low-income and homeless
citizens in Auburn.
• 2019-2020 Funding Cycle/Council Priorities
City Councilmembers have expressed interest in revisiting current funding priorities.
The Committee will take these new ideas as they are presented and utilize them in
their funding recommendations in the Spring of 2018 when the 2019-2020
application cycle is open. The Committee will also consider these new priorities
while at the Human Services Committee Retreat in January 2018.
IV. ANNOUNCEMENTS
• The next regular Human Services Committee meeting is scheduled for Monday,
October 23, 2017.
V. ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned at 4:42 p.m.
