III. AGENDA
• Introductions
Emily Pearson introduced the group to Joy Scott, the City's new Human Services Manager.
Joy previously worked for the Housing Development Consortium and Solid Ground. Joy's
extensive background in housing planning, policy development and social work will serve as
a great asset for the Community Services Division and the Auburn community as a whole.
• 2019-2020 funding cycle/council priorities
Committee members once again discussed funding priorities for the 2019-2020 biennial
funding cycle. The four current priorities (Child Abuse & Neglect, Domestic Violence &
Sexual Assault, Health Care and Poverty Reduction) are assumed to be over ten years old.
Member JoAnne Walters stated the current directives most likely originated from City
Council. Chair Jason Berry reminded the group that it's important for them to understand
their roles as seen by City Council and vice versa. Joy Scott suggested comparing best
practices and priorities from other South King County cities. Additionally, a conversation with
Council prior to presenting recommendations for the next cycle would be beneficial for both
the Committee and Councilmembers. It would be a good opportunity to explain the logic and
history behind the Committee's recommendations process and what the members see in
their role as an advisory body.
Dana Hinman gave an update regarding the progress of the overnight shelter that's slated to
open at Valley Cities. The project is behind schedule but Catholic Community Services, who
is coordinating the shelter operations, hopes to have an opening date in mid-November.
• End of year & retreat scheduling
Committee Members will be present at the November meeting. Emily Pearson will send an
email to the group in early December to plan for that meeting.
Jason Berry said the YMCA may have a room available to use as Retreat space in January.
The group will discuss this further at the November meeting.
