III. MISCELLANEOUS
• New member updates
A total of nine (9) applications were submitted for the open Human Services
Committee spots; four (4) spots will be filled and those applications have been sent
to Mayor Backus for consideration and appointment. Phone interviews were
conducted with 7 of the applicants; one declined to move along in the process and
one did not respond to an interview request. Joy Scott gave a brief overview of each
of the four potential members. Qualifications include a King County Housing
Authority employee, a Muckleshoot Tribal member, one applicant with extensive
financial management within non-profit systems, and one United Way employee.
Two recently graduated from the Civics Academy. All four recommended applicants
have substantial ties to the Auburn community. Member Barb Derda stated the
importance of attendance at meetings and said she hoped that it was conveyed
during the interviews. Emily Pearson began each interview by letting applicants know
of the meeting timeframe. Joy mentioned that a shift of the meeting time may be
necessary in the future if it continues to be a barrier for membership participation.
• January meeting planning
Member JoAnne Walters had suggested a mid-day luncheon meeting during January
to welcome new members, however that meeting will be planned during February
instead. The agenda will include planning for 2019 meetings, member expectations,
etc.
• New business
Barb asked if any Councilmembers had questions regarding the Committee's funding
recommendations for 2019-2020. Joy said that a few questions were asked during
her presentation to Council a while back but nothing had come up since. Council did
acknowledge the Committee's hard work and exceptional amount of time spent
during this year's deliberations. Lela Brugger asked if the vote would be public; Emily
said that yes, it will be part of the 2019-2020 biennial budget vote at the December 3,
2018 Council meeting, which is open to everyone.
Joy let the group know that Community Services will relocate under the Community
Development Department in December. 2019 meetings have been scheduled for
Annex Conference Room 1.
