Call to Order The Urban Tree Board meeting began at 2:06 pm Attendance: Chairperson Bryce Landrud, members Tanya Galat, Linda Bielejec, Brooksie Hall. Staff in attendance: Park Planning Manager Thaniel Gouk & Administrative assistant Alexa Bragg II. Minutes August minutes were approved III. Correspondence/Public Input IV. Old Business Chairperson Bryce Landrud stated there are quite a few ash trees in Lakeland Hills, but not so much in downtown Auburn The ash trees were discussed because the board had just recently become aware that they are dying due to the Emerald Green Ash Borer, a pest native to Asia that is spreading the United States and Canada with no cure. We should not plant any more ash since they can’t be saved. Our Chairman, Bryce Landrud was aware of the problems with planting them now V. New Business The Urban Tree Board voted in favor of Bryce Landrud to continue holding the position of Chairperson The Urban Tree Board voted in favor of Linda Bielejec as Vice-Chairperson Tree board member Tanya Galat suggested a Cedrus Deodara, know as the Deodar Cedar, be planted for Arbor Day by R Street passed the fence of the west baseball field of Game Farm Park Thaniel will talk to Park Maintenance Manager Stefanie Coleman regarding tree planting in this suggested space The board discussed meeting each of the next two months, then will assess meeting frequency for remainder of the year Thaniel will also speak with the Mayor’s office regarding the official 2024 Arbor Day date celebration Chairperson Bryce mentioned the Empress Tree (heritage tree) in Veteran’s Memorial park needs the photo updated on the PowerPoint VI. Board Recommendations/Input The board talked about potential 2024 Heritage Trees, a large apple tree on F St SE in particular that Chair Bryce had spoken about Chairperson Bryce had suggested submitting an article to the Auburn Reporter regarding a study for forest/sloped area for the Auburn Golf Course; decided to modify to remove the Golf Course from the article Vice-chair Linda suggested to submit to the Auburn Magazine as they are quarterly and may reach a larger audience in the city VII.
