Serving: Low-income residents of King County on their journey to
homeownership.
Developer/Sponsor Highlights
Habitat for Humanity of Seattle-King County is building 40 new permanently affordable
homes in Burien. At its completion, this development will serve approximately 166
individuals who have lived or worked in the area for the past year and who earn
between 50-80% of Area Median Income.
Burien is home to a high population of low-income residents who work throughout King
County. As our region has expanded, affordability has dwindled in both the housing and
rental markets, pushing residents out of areas that had previously been affordable. We
know that the increased cost of housing has born disproportionate impact on black,
Hispanic, native and Asian-American households. Habitat’s 40 new homes will rapidly
expand homeownership opportunities in our community, curbing displacement for many
families and paving the way toward generational wealth building.

Developer/Sponsor Highlights
Homestead Community Land Trust creates stability, equity and opportunity by developing land
and housing in trust, giving lower-income households the opportunity to own a home that is
affordable to them and remains affordable to future owners. Our work is expanding an equitable
economy for housing to help repair the harms of housing discrimination and protect vulnerable
communities from displacement.
Our growing supply of permanently affordable homes for ownership plays an essential role in
giving all people equitable access to opportunity. When modest income families have
opportunities to gain stability and create wealth safely through affordable homeownership,
neighborhoods gain strength and resilience, and our community moves together towards social
justice, economic vitality, and environmental sustainability.
Willowcrest was the first of two Net-Zero Energy demonstration projects that provided first-time
homebuyer opportunities for households making less than 80% AMI. These three- and four-
bedroom townhomes are highly energy efficient and produce electricity on site through solar
panels. The project was awarded a Governor’s Smart Communities award as a demonstration
of a partnership between Renton Housing Authority, which provided the land, and Homestead
Community Land Trust, which developed and currently stewards the homes.
Sunset Neighborhood
Revitalization
The Sunset neighborhood is one of
Renton’s most diverse communities,
historically characterized by high
poverty rates and substandard
housing conditions. Over the past 15
years, the city has collaborated with
the Renton Housing Authority, Renton
School District, and other public and
private partners to revitalize the area.
Significant public investment,
totaling over $130 million in the
last decade, has transformed
Sunset through the
implementation of the Sunset
Area Transformation Plan since
2016.
New amenities such as a library,
accessible playground, a multi-
service center, and a three-acre
neighborhood park have been
added. Infrastructure improvements include a regional stormwater facility,
upgraded roads and utilities, and additional park enhancements.
Affordable housing is a cornerstone of the Sunset Neighborhood's development.
By 2026, the community will boast a diverse mix of housing options, including
over 480 affordable rental units and more than 30 affordable homeownership
opportunities. To foster an inclusive environment, the neighborhood will also offer
over 740 market-rate housing units, creating a vibrant, balanced community.
