Hello Auburn! I was your Poet Laureate from 2021-2023, and I am still honored to have had
the privilege. I am still heavily involved in the monthly poetry readings at the Postmark as
the emcee. As we head towards the end of Mateo’s tenure, I would love to nominate
Nancy Colson for Auburn’s next Poet Laureate. Nancy has been involved with the poetry
community in Auburn for multiple decades and is currently the treasurer for our group that
oversees the monthly poetry event. She is also heavily involved as a volunteer for the
Auburn Symphony. She is a fine poet, and while her portfolio of poems in print is on the
lighter side, her volunteerism and her love and appreciation of poetry and the arts in
Auburn are unmatched. Much like Dick Brugger as the first Poet Laureate, this choice is for
a person who has given much of their life towards supporting Auburn. If there is such a
thing as a slam dunk choice, I truly believe Nancy is it, and I would love to see her show
Auburn just what she can do.
Thanks for your time and consideration and have a great rest of your 2026!
James Rodgers

Nancy Fallert Colson was born in Burlington, Washington to Stephan (Steve) and Florence Fallert.
She lived her childhood at the Samish (north of Burlington), Issaquah, and Green River salmon hatcheries
where her father was the superintendent.
The family lived on hatchery grounds as required by his responsibilities. Nancy spent many hours
shadowing her dad and became very aware of and knowledgeable about the salmon species he raised in
hatchery operation. He had grown up on a homestead in rural Kalama and was very close to nature. He
instilled that interest and knowledge in Nancy, his oldest, from her very earliest years.
Nancy’s mother was an accomplished pianist, an avid reader, and, while unpublished, wrote
many essays and memory pieces. She was a prolific letter writer and was part of the Auburn Library
writers’ group for many years. The children, her brother Peter, her sister Cathie and she were encouraged
to read and learn. In fact, reading was a way to get out of chores! Her grandparents had been teachers
and also encouraged reading. Letter writing to family and friends was a family activity.
Nancy’s grandfather loved poetry and is remembered reading Shakespeare and Robert Burns
among others. He and her grandmother would often recite poems they had learned as children. Poetry
and storytelling were important parts of family life. Nancy started writing poems when she was very
young and although never pursuing it as a profession, has written on and off over the years.
Some time ago through her friendship with Dick Brugger, Nancy discovered Monday night poetry
readings at the Rainbow Café. She attended regularly and was inspired to write and read her own poems.
The Rainbow readings did not survive COVID, but for several years Nancy has attended a twice-a-month
poets group at the Kent Senior Center. Participants were given an assignment, a subject to write a poem
about to bring and read at the next meeting, and a prompt to write and share a short poem during the
session.
In early 2024, after completion of the Postmark Center for the Arts, Nancy contacted James
Rogers, a past Auburn Poet Laureate, and Cindy Hutchings, an Auburn poet, both part of the Rainbow
Café poetry group, to see if the City of Auburn would consider supporting monthly poetry readings at the
Postmark. As the Auburn Avenue Poets, they met with Allison Hyde from Auburn Parks, Arts, and
Recreation. Allison was enthusiastic and supportive. First Wednesday, Poets at the Postmark was born
and continues today.
Nancy has been active in supporting the arts. She served several terms on the Auburn Arts
Commission, was a founding member of 4Culture board of directors, and has served on the Auburn
Symphony board since 1997. The arts, and the literary arts in particular, are a passion built in her
childhood and alive to this day. Nourishing poetry as Poet Laureate would be a dream come true.

I am honored to nominate Ziarre McGuire for this opportunity. I believe they would be an excellent candidate because
of her creativity, unique perspective, and ability to express themselves through words and storytelling.
She has a thoughtful and imaginative way of looking at the world. She have a voice that deserves to be encouraged,
heard, and given the opportunity to grow. I believe participating in this would provide her with a meaningful space to
explore their creativity, build confidence, connect with other young writers, and develop her own authentic story.

Being yoursI used to think i was unlovableWanted to believe I wasn’t enough No one would want to care for meI made sure they knew I was troubleTo be with, to understand
Like I was something too much
They thought they had access to my body but they never touched my heart
This wasn’t something I planned
To be connected with you LoveBut we met and we’re hereAnd I feel things inside me come undone
It hurts, the distanceAnd it brings us painSpace we never signed up for
But now have to live in
Ourselves feeling locked away Trapped and strained
It gets harder every day
Pushing and pulling We love and we curse We dance and we sway
I need you needing me
I nourish you and you’re satisfyingly mine
I’m yours, without it being said
We wouldn’t dare dream about being anyone elses
our love is our blanket to the heart of our bed in my mind and in yoursI realize my dream is coming true, to belong to someone, to have them belong to youI know this is true love, and we’re breaking a curse Put on us to keep us apartAnd make our hearts cold and hardNo matter how mad I’m with youI’ll always love you more
Even if our souls are hurt and sore
I will walk with you until I can’t, through better, bad or worse

I wish we were different instead of hanging on the internet and rather accepting differences than stopping our words from becoming sentences, not run on, or maybe run on, boy come on ‘fore I get gone, and how come neither of us is listening to the way our hearts want to listen in Read the room and find a seat and cuddle in warmth of our heatThe taste was bittersweet but addicting to say the least, and I can’t believe im up right now, well I can (I had to wash my sheets)
But can you blame me? Trying to show a different skin when im the same me, everything and nothing is
changing, nothing and everything has changed me, im going crazy, i never felt this imbalance before i swear
not tryna be an ear sore would rather make your bed sore as i go fishing for nutrients like you’re my
albacore and I could savor you like a taste and protect you like drug and the deeper I dug to what’s now a distant memory so what, I knew you weren’t the remedy but do you even want to remember me and carry me in your memory? Or does it hurt your heart to think about, like how it hurts me?

To be the birds that chirp and play
I’m jealous as it may be
Those birds and their songs drive me crazy
And make me
Wish it were me and my baby
Singing along
Singing a song
Wishing along clouds
And being surrounded
By our own company
Sometimes it crumbles me
Knowing you’re not here to reassure me
Or anything
I yearn for the day I have you in front of me

Is it a dream? A trance? I want to learn what this dance is, feeling my body surrender under those hot glances of yours, i
need you behind closed doors

If i loved you less
If i loved you less, there would be no doubt that your name would escape my tongue and I’d let it
If i loved you less, i would care less about your routine, when i could talk to you and if you could squeeze
me in
If i loved you less, my heart wouldn’t skip and my stomach wouldn’t flip
If i loved you less, I’d be so mature, ready for whoever came next instead not wanting anyone but you
If i loved you less, I’d tease you moreover, make constant funny jokes and jabs but i still feel lucky to have met you
If i loved you less I wouldn’t be writing you poetry every other midnight, and if i loved you less I would talk
about it all the time

I carry my stubbornness in the pockets of genes i got from my dad. It’s deep yet hollow often without reason. I wrap my passive aggressive scarf my mother gifted me around my head, holding it higher than others heads too, it climbs to the sky. The words painted on the fabric are “no nothings wrong”some swirls of “don’t worry about it then” and “whatever you want to do is fine with mes”. I wear my frustration perfume on special occasions like when im exhausted and no one chooses to see it. I spray it when they say “im just being lazy”. Something you don’t even have to smell, it’s a silent mist of anger that settles as hurt. Because
that’s what i truly am. Some people own mood bracelets and happiness earrings. Im pierced, have been
since i was one. I don’t wear earrings really anymore. I used to wear them more.

Sculpture
John Howard is a Seattle-based
sculptor. His practice examines how
hand-rendering imparts individuality
and character to computer-designed
objects. John’s sculptures are
designed using CAD software known
for producing mathematically
precise forms. While these digital
models are accurate to the micron,
the process of hand rendering them
introduces organic imperfections.

Art Quilts
“While I've had a life-long appreciation
of textiles of all sorts, art -specifically
art quilting -is something I've only had
time for since retirement and I'm
enjoying it immensely. I love
experimenting with and learning new
skills, combining techniques and
materials and incorporating interesting
textiles into my work while happily
ignoring the 'quilt police' rules often
applied to traditional quilting.”

repurposed fragments, I channel
the power of inner truth where
beads become divine, and
imagination shatters

present a captivating body of

African beaded art with
contemporary expression.”

“I generally work with intention, but
sometimes images--particularly
abstracts just present themselves. We
live in an area (the Pacific Northwest)
of boundless beauty, and there are

Jenny Stuart is a recovering
technologist, photographer, and
lifelong lover of wild places. Raised off
the grid in the backwoods of Canada,
she grew up outdoors, where curiosity,
discovery, and a deep connection to

early relationship with the natural world
continues to shape her photography

Art on Main Recommendations
Laura Hoppenjans
I would like to create a colorful and dynamic
ceramic installation consisting of botanic inspired
pieces for the Art on Main opportunity. These
pieces would be new work that would continue on
my 'Unknown Species' series, creating fantastical
sculptures that are reminiscent of both ancient
and futurist life forms. The individual pieces in this
series are built on the concept of plant life forms
that evolve to survive in a future/post-climate
change world
These forms would be displayed on pedestals and
would be engaging from all sides. No mounts
would be needed, and the forms could be lit for 24
hr display.

For Art on Main or the Vault Gallery, I envision a
series of sculptural reliquaries, or “relics”as I call
them, centered on the salmon and its journey
through the interconnected waters of the Salish
Sea, including the Green/Duwamish watershed.
I think of the reliquary as both a shrine and a
container for memory: a place to honor
something while questioning whether we have
done enough to protect it.
•The storefront setting is particularly appropriate
for this work. At night, subtle low-voltage LED
lighting will illuminate the central salmon and
selected architectural details, giving the piece
the presence of an illuminated shrine.

•I'd like to install my piece titled
Coalescence. It's a large-scale immersive
textile installation featuring a prominent
cosmic black figure which about 7 ft tall, an
arm, a hand, and about 15 vibrant floral
textiles placed at intervals around the
space. The flexibility of the installation
allows it to scale well in a room or window.
This piece was shown at Shunpike Artists
Storefronts in 2025 and A Gallery in 2026.
Each time I show it I add new elements
that fit the intended space.

For the Art on Main Gallery, I propose a site-
specific sculptural installation tentatively titled
*The Cost of Living*. The installation would
transform the window-front gallery into a
surreal scene inspired by city life, consumer
culture, money, survival, and the pressures
people experience while moving through
modern society.
Familiar objects associated with everyday life—
money, food, advertisements, street imagery,
traps, discarded materials, and other
recognizable symbols—would be enlarged,
altered, or placed in unexpected relationships.

I propose to present The Journey About My Baby
& I, an immersive multimedia installation that
transforms the Vault gallery into the intimate
world of a nomadic mother artist. The work
draws from my own experience of motherhood,
immigration, travel, and building a new home
while carrying the memories and meaningful
objects of my family with me.
The installation will be a vintage traveling
suitcase filled with personal and symbolic
objects from my life journey. Photographs,
small keepsakes, family belongings, and other
treasured objects represent the memories I
chose to carry across places and stages of my
life.

I would love to bring a variation of my exhibit
‘Solastalgia - Reliquaries for the Anthropocene’
to one of the City of Auburn’s site-specific
galleries in 2027. These unique artworks explore
a changing sense of the sacred in an age of
rapid climate change and biodiversity loss.
Following centuries-old traditions, I create
contemporary reliquaries, shrines and
altarpieces that together ask -what is truly
sacred now, as we experience a natural world in
upheaval?

•We are proposing “Playce,” a collaborative and
immersive art experience, for the Vault. Upon
entering, visitors are drawn inside the sanctuary of a
softly-lit, vibrant, patchwork blanket fort-like tent to
collaborate on an interactive artwork. Inside this
oasis of play, visitors can find sculptural seats and
explore tactile, sculptural elements arranged on a
low table. As participants manipulate the objects,
their interactions are captured on camera and
transformed into a dynamic kaleidoscopic projection
displayed on the exposed walls of the Vault.

The work that I would like to exhibit is an
installation of 2 pieces- Top Prize and Flora
Obscura. Top Prize is currently a 34 component
sculpture of paper creatures intended to be hung
on a wall, mounted with map pins.
They are made out of scratch-it lottery tickets I
have scratched as well as from friends and
family. For the City of Auburn installation, I
intend to make more creatures, rounding the
total number of components out to 40. The
number 40 being significant in its traditional
connotation of death in both Eastern and
Western cultures.

My display would be entirely made of
beach debris collected in Ocean and
Washington, which is deconstructed and
upcycled into wind spinners and mobiles.
Similar to the installation "Ocean Born"
in the samples, these buoys and floats
naturally look like sea creatures and
fauna, and depending on the space, I
could create standing pieces that rise
from the ground as well..

When I imagine creating an installation for
the window display for Art on Main, I would
like to weave a site-specific piece that travels
the length of the floor. I would like to use
nude reed to create this large-scale sculpture
because the cream color would create a
beautiful contrast to the colors of the sticks
and barks in the work I would like to display
on the wall. I would display already
completed works of mine on the walls and
weave an onsite sculptural piece to bring a
more dynamic engagement to the window
space.

Through the exploration of mixed media such as
encaustic paint, porcelain, flora and fauna, I will
create a show centered around organic form and
notions of ephemerality. This is addressed through the
use of dried material, reference to floral and bodily
forms, and an emphasis on textures.
Within this exhibition, I plan to make new works of
wall hung encaustic wax and gouache paintings that
will correspond with porcelain and encaustic wax
painted sculptures. The painting and vessels will exist
in a greater installation of paper works with dried
florals incorporated into all works.
