To: Mayor Pete Lewis, PCDC Committee From: Daryl Faber, Director, Parks, Arts and Recreation Date: January 21, 2009 Re: Inclusive Playground at Les Gove Park Background: Staffwas directed to provide information related to the addition of an Inclusive Playground in Les Gove Park. The existing playground is below standard for the park and will need to be removed to make room for the new parking lot access to the proposed Community Center. Current Situation: Over the past 4 months staff reviewed the development costs as well as potential locations in the park for this needed addition. "Northwest Playground" has developed a preliminary playground display to give an idea as to what would be available for "around $200,000". Specific design elements would be the role of the proposed community task force. It is recommended that a broad base steering committee, (business rep, medical rep, ASD rep, service club reps, park board ect) representing the community be formed (similar to the golf course taskforce) in an effort make this a citizen led dream. This 7-9 member taskforce wou(d be tasked with "selling the vision". Attached is a list of potential foundations as well as other donors that have been recognized by staff as contributors to these efforts in the past. Financial Implications: No unbudgeted city expenditures will be needed for this project. The 2010 parks budget anticipates the use of $50,000 towards this $200,000 endeavor. Next Steps: Request that the Mayor authorize staff to provide the structure of the "task force" as well as potential names to serve on such a committee. Timeline: Form taskforce February Initial Meeting (define goals and objectives) March Capital Campaign (foundations, business and in-kind support) april-oct RFP for Playground Nov Groundbreaking/Earthwork March Playground Installation/Celebration May/June Potential Funding Partners for the Les Gove Boundless Playground (Goal $200,000-$250,000) City of Auburn ($50,000) 2010 King County Youth Sports Grant ($50,000) King County Housing Service Clubs (Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis, Optimist, Soroptimist) Auburn Regional Hospital Multi Care Muckleshoot Tribe Boeing Foundation Boeing Recycle Fund Safeway Foundation Weyerhaeuser Foundation Supermall of the Northwest Starbucks Foundation Wal-Mart Foundation Windermere Foundation Zones Physical Therapy Firms (Apple, Cascade, Lakeland, MVP, Auburn Sports) Other Assoc.
