Background Summary: I As environmental, economic, and social concerns have continued to increase on local, regional and global levels there has been a simultaneous heightened awareness of sustainability. At this time laws have been and are being enacted to ensure future sustainability. The City Council recently heard a presentation on community sustainability and global climate protection by Councilmember Wagner at the City Council Committee of the Whole Meeting March 31, 2008. In that presentation, a number of actions and decisions the City can take were expressed. Those actions would help to further ensure community sustainability, minimize negative impacts on the natural environment, help ensure adequate long-term local, regional, national, and global resources, and can help reduce global warming and climate change. Staff recommends adoption of the attached resolution and preparation of subsequent code. WHEREAS, sustainability seeks to balance and support the needs of the community, the environment, the economy, and the needs of future generations; and WHEREAS, sustainability has emerged and become a local, regional, national, and global concern; and WHEREAS, local governments have passed resolutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to work to increase sustainability; and WHEREAS, City Council has heard policy discussion on community sustainability and global climate protection by Councilmember Wagner at the City Council Committee of the Whole Meeting March 31, 2008; and WHEREAS, progress towards sustainability includes City actions such as, the encouragement of hybrid vehicles and the reduction of fossil fuel use, the sponsorship of green projects, the development of green design and construction standards, the promotion of commute trip reduction programs and mass transit, the promotion of environmental preservation, recycling, the conservation and reuse of water, the enforcement and management of air quality, the overall reduction of energy consumption and more efficient use of resources; and WHEREAS, actions for sustainability are likely to ensure community sustainability, minimize negative impacts on the natural environment, help ensure Resolution No. 4368 June 19, 2008 Page 1 of 3 adequate long-term local, regional, and national global resources, and can help reduce global warming and climate change. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUBURN HEREBY RESOLVES as follows: Section 1. Support for actions of local, regional, national, and global level sustainability by nurturing Auburn to be environmentally, economically, and socially vital, enacting green construction standards that make good financial sense, promoting local environmental preservations, using energy and other resources prudently, and avoiding actions that contribute to global warming is hereby acknowledged by the City of Auburn.
