Background Summary:
Staff has been coordinating with King County Department of Natural Resources and eight (8) South King
County cities to develop and operate an off-leash area dog park (OLA). Staff in each city has received
numerous requests of OLAs and a regional approach was developed so that each city would not have to
develop individual facilities. Over the past 12 months, numerous milestones have been met: (1) area
park development staff developed a site master plan; (2) a proposal to operate the park was received by
King County from Serve Our Dog Area-South (SODA), the same agency that operates the OLA at
Marymoor Park in Redmond; and (3) Two community forums have been held attracting over 200
participants.
The concessionaire (SODA) will be responsible for all operation and maintenance of the facility, as well
as the coordination of special events. King County will assume liability for the site. The City of Kent will
be taking the lead on the initial capital construction. Each city in the "Task Force Area" is being asked to
contribute 7.5 - 10 cents per citizen to fund the initial development. Much of the labor is being performed
by volunteers. Auburn's financial commitment will be approximately $3,000 -$4,000. Capital
construction costs (primarily fencing) are estimated at $35,000. The park is currently a closed King
County facility.
