Background Summary:
The City of Auburn, in collaboration with the Auburn School District, ACAP Child and Family Services, St.
Matthew's Episcopal Church and La Iglesia el Buen Pastor (Good Shepard Latino Presbyterian Church);
successfully applied for a $60,500 Byrne grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice to create and operate a
Neighborhood Learning Center at Olympic Middle School.
The OMS Neighborhood Learning Center is an extended school-day program. The Center will focus
primarily on Latino and Native American students who do not meet the District or State standards in
mathematics. It will offer 2 ½ hours of after-school instruction and recreation, four days per week. The
program staff consists of two certified teachers, two para-educators, and four recreational staff. The
program curriculum will use the same curriculum used by regular, school-day teachers. They School
District uses a language-rich mathematics curriculum. In addition to improving mathematics scores,
students will also improve their reading and English skills. In addition after-school activities, the Program
includes creating a Parent Advisory Board that will meet twice a month. It will provide parents various
incentives to pursue their own educational goals. The outcome of program will be increasing the
academic success of Latino and Native American students along with their attachment, along with their
parents attachment and commitment, to education.
Attached is a spreadsheet representing the grant budget. In addition to the Byrne Grant, the City
received a $25,000 grant from the South King County United Way to create a Latino Neighborhood
Center in South Auburn. The United Way grant will be used to provide the funds for the Apple Parenting
Classes along with other supportive services to the Parent Advisory Board.
If the Program is successful at making progress toward achieving its outcomes and outputs, then Office of
Juvenile Justice will renew the grant for a total term of four years.
At their meeting on July 12, 2004, the Planning and Community Development Committee recommended
approval.
