Resolution No. 3778; Plan detail
Administrative Recommendation:
City Council to approve Resolution No. 3778.
Backqround Summary:
Earlier this year the City was approached by Mr. Ken Nelson of Nelson's Jewelry regarding the donation
of a street clock to the City of Auburn. A small committee consisting of Councilmember Norman, a
representative of the ADA design committee, and city staff was formed to work with Mr. Nelson to obtain
the details of his proposal.
Date: October 26, 2004
Budget Impact:
Elements of the proposal are as follows:
Mr. Nelson proposes to purchase the street clock. No financial contribution from the City for the purchase
of the clock is expected. However, Mr. Nelson's expectation is that the City would install the street clock
including connecting the street clock to a power source. The City has verified that this is capable of being
accomplished.
Mr. Nelson indicated that he is willing to maintain and service the street clock so long as he is around.
However, Mr. Nelson did indicate that the City will need to set the clock during daylight savings time and
when power fails. There should be an entry on the pole that can be opened that allows the clock to be
reset.
The street clock will have two faces and is slightly more than 11 feet tall. The clock faces will be lit and
the preference is for Roman Numerals (rather than Arabic). The color of the pole is still to be determined,
although green or black is likely. Also, Mr. Nelson proposes to incorporate some type of discreet signage
on the clock faces that would have text such as:
"Nelson's Jewelry
Auburn WA"
The preferred location is the northeast corner of the intersection of West Main Street and Auburn Avenue,
just south of the Nelson's Jewelry awning.
