Administrative Recommendation:
City Council to grant permission to enter into an agreement with Netventure, Inc. to design, install and
test a proof of concept for a wireless communications network within the City. Create a hot zone that
police, fire and city officials may access the Internet and the city’s private network when traveling the area
SE of city hall. (Approximately 2.5 mile range).
Background Summary:
The City will create “Hot Zones” within the city limits to provide secure high speed Internet access and
LAN access for police, fire and city vehicles traveling in the city. Benefit: With high-speed wireless
Internet access police officers will file reports and look up information without having to travel back to
justice center, thus increasing patrol time in their assigned areas.
If the proof of concept is accepted, future growth of the wireless network is expected to provide
communications facilities for Intelligent Transportation System expansion, security of city facilities,
economic development and tourism. Building officials could update building permit information from their
cars. The fire department could pull up a floor plan or vital information about the building they are enroute
to.
