Background Summary:
The City of Auburn and other cities in Pierce County appreciate the significant contributions made by and
received from military bases located in Pierce County, namely Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base,
as well as the contributions and sacrifices made by individual members of the armed forces and their
families.
Because of the importance of the Pacific Northwest to national commerce, the importance of these
military installations in this geographic setting is significant. It is in the best interest of the City of Auburn,
Pierce County, the State of Washington, and the United States of America that these installations be
maintained for the protection of all.
Resolution No. 3854 expresses support for the maintenance of Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF AUBURN, WASHINGTON, EXPRESSING
SUPPORT FOR MAINTENANCE OF FORT LEWIS
AND McCHORD AIR FORCE BASE
WHEREAS, the City of Auburn and other cities in Pierce County,
appreciate the significant contributions made by and received from the military
bases located within Pierce County, namely Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force
Base, as well as from the contributions from individual servicemen and
servicewomen stationed there; and
WHEREAS, the military bases were the product of contributions by the
citizens of Pierce County and their donations of land for the purpose of
establishing military bases almost one hundred years ago; and
WHEREAS, because of the importance of the Pacific Northwest to
national commerce, the importance of these military installations in this
geographic setting is significant;
WHEREAS, like other citizens of Pierce County cities and the citizens of
many cities of the state of Washington, the citizens of Auburn also appreciate the
contributions and the dedication and the sacrifices made by the members of the
armed forces at these installations, as well as their families; and
WHEREAS, also like the citizens of Pierce County cities and the citizens
of many other cities of the state of Washington, the citizens of Auburn recognize
and appreciate the leadership and principled strength that these members of the
armed forces and their families provide to the community, the State and the
country; and

WHEREAS, it is in the best interests of the City of Auburn, Pierce County,
the State of Washington and the United States of America for these installations
to be maintained and continue to make their great contributions for the protection
of all of us.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUBURN,
WASHINGTON, RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:
1. The City Council supports the maintenance of Fort Lewis and McChord
Air Force Base, and their continued functions and presence in the Pacific
Northwest, and the Mayor is authorized and requested to communicate the City
Council's position to the President of the United States and to Congress, as
stated in this resolution.
2. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect upon passage and
signatures hereon.
