Administrative Recommendation:
City Council adopt Resolution No. 3945.
Background Summary:
In 2004, cultural arts staff met with engineering staff to discuss public works projects that may benefit
from the integration or addition of public artwork. Based on information gathered at the meeting, cultural
arts staff drafted a list of several potential sites/projects for public art installation in 2005 and 2006. The
sites/projects were approved by the City Council's Planning and Community Development Committee
(PCDC) last year. Originally the City of Auburn Arts Commission recommended the M Street grade
separation project for the 2006 public art project; however, due to the postponement of the M Street
project, the commission considered other public works projects and recommends the non -motorized
improvement project at West Main Street. This project is between the Interurban Trail and the Burlington
Northern Santa Fe Railroad tracks.
Potential public art elements for this area could be a drinking fountain at the Interurban Trail, a crosswalk
treatment where the Interurban Trail crosses West Main, and sidewalk design elements.
In conjunction with the City's desire to incorporate public art into City construction projects, artists will be
chosen through a competitive selection process in accordance with the City of Auburn Arts Commission.
With the $30,000 fee (REET dollars), the artist would work with City staff and the City of Auburn Arts
Commission to design, fabricate, and install artwork at the chosen site in 2006.
Staff requests acceptance of this site for the integrated project in 2006.
