Background Summary: In November 2005 the City of Auburn hired LMN Architects to assist in the development of a town center plaza concept in the vicinity of Auburn City Hall, including the intersection of West Main Street and Division Street. This effort was intended to complement LMN Architect's other work involving the development of revised zoning and design standards for the Auburn Downtown that will help create a vibrant, pedestrian -oriented urban core of residences and businesses. To date, very preliminary alternative town center plaza concepts have been developed for the area around the intersection of West Main Street and Division Street, including the Auburn City Hall plaza. While no specific alternative has been formally selected, each concept to date pursues the broad objective of enhancing downtown aesthetics and creating an integrated "public square" for people to gather both formally and informally. The concept of establishing pedestrian oriented amenities and public spaces in the downtown area is consistent with the City's urban center designation as well as with the adopted Auburn Downtown Plan. Such amenities can, among other items, attract customers, provide gathering places that promote social interaction, and provide for a visual "break" in the urban landscape. At this time the City Council is being asked to endorse the broad concept of a "public square" at this location. More specific designs are still being developed and will be presented to the City Council in the future.
