City Council award Small Works Contract 06-02, Project Number C526A, SE 320lh Street Water Meter
and Vault Replacement, to VLS Construction, Inc. on their low bid of $69,830.00 plus WA state sales tax
of $6,145.04 for a total contract price of $75,975.04.
Background Summary:
The purpose of this project is to replace an existing 41 year old water meter vault and meter for Green
River Community College, while at the same time, moving the vault and meter to a location within the
future sidewalk alignment to be constructed by King county. The King County work in the Right of Way
requires that the existing meter vault be abandoned. Construction of the vault relocation is expected to
begin the week of May 8lh and end the week of May 29lh.
The City received 3 bids for this project ranging from $75,975.04 to $91,114.56. After review of these
bids, they appear to be representative of the current market for this type of unique work. The Engineer's
Estimate does not adequately reflect the true cost of the work.
Since this project must be completed prior to the King County road improvement project scheduled for
June 2006 there is not time to try to rebid the project, and it is unlikely that a rebid would result in lower
costs.
This project is within the 430 Water Fund's Repair and Replacement program and additional funds are
available to pay for this project within the program budget.
