Administrative Recommendation:
City Council adopt Resolution No. 4107.
Background Summary:
The City received a Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety Grant through the Washington State Department of
Transportation in the amount of $124,300 to design and construct a mid -block pedestrian crossing on
Auburn Way South between Dogwood Street SE and Fir Street SE. This grant does not require a match.
The project includes:
• Crosswalk Striping and truncated dome warning strip
• Angled crosswalk that forces pedestrians to turn and look in the direction of oncoming traffic
• Advance warning signage for drivers
• Overhead crosswalk sign with flashing lights
• Raised median for pedestrian refuge
The project will accomplish three objectives: alert drivers to possible pedestrians in the roadway, provide
a safe crossing and waiting area in a highly trafficked pedestrian location, and encourage pedestrians to
cross at a marked crossing rather than at an unmarked location.
