Administrative Recommendation:
City Council adopt Resolution No. 4172
Background Summary:
In August, 2002, the City and the White River Valley Historical Society entered into an agreement to allow
the society to raise funds and work toward the renovation of the buildings on the Mary Olson Farm.
During the current duration of the lease agreement, over $600,000 was raised from outside sources, and
is being used to restore the farm. To date all buildings have new, hidden foundations; new old-looking
cedar shake roofs; the barn floor and cedar plank walls have been replaced; portions of the property were
cleared of invasive species; the weaving house exterior was fully restored; the entry gate and driveway
were restored; porches were designed for the farmhouse, and the back porch is under construction.
Additionally, museum staff members, supported largely from grant money, is developing curriculum
components in partnership with Auburn School District teachers.
The goals to make the Mary Olson Farm not only a refurbished historical site, but also a living history
element for the community has been significantly enhanced with the partnership created by this lease
agreement between the City and the Historical Society. Due to this collaborative lease agreement the
farm is moving toward a 2008 or early 2009 public opening date.
Staff asks Council to agree to extend the length of this lease agreement for an additional twenty year
duration.
