Background Summary: On Friday, March 23, 2007, a truck struck the northwest signal pole at the intersection of Auburn Way North and 1St Street NE. Maintenance and Operation staff responded to the incident and repaired the pedestrian push buttons, but noted that the pole was bent at the impact point. The signal pole is currently standing, but is leaning significantly due to the large dent. It is uncertain if the pole could withstand any significant weather event, such as high wind loading. It is also uncertain if the pole could withstand any additional impact. It also appears that signal pole foundation was damaged. It is recommended that this be replaced as soon as possible. The scope of work would include installing a new signal pole and foundation at the NW corner. Installing a new foundation will allow the existing signal to remain functional during the construction. New conduit will be required on two legs of the signal. It is anticipated that the City will be compensated for all damages from the Trucking firm responsible for the damages and therefore have no net impact to the budget.
