Background Summary:
The City and Auburn School District received a federal Safe Routes to School grant through the
Washington State Department of Transportation in the amount of $185,000 for on- and off-site
improvements at Olympic Middle School. This grant does not require a match.
The grant will fund:
1. Installation of anon-motorized, shared-use path adjacent to Olympic Middle School along the eastern
side of H Street SE, from 17th Street SE to 21st Street SE, which will accommodate both pedestrian
and bicycle travel, enabling students to safely access the school site via H Street SE;
2. Installation of new crosswalks and signage at 21st Street SE and H Street SE, 17th Street SE and H
Street SE, 17th Street SE and K Street SE, and H Street SE at 19th Street SE, as well as two new
on-site school crosswalks;
3. Installation of street and crosswalk lighting;
4. Installation of new flashing beacons on 17th and 21st Streets SE;
5. Student and parent education on how to utilize the new walking/cycling route; and
6. An enforcement component including increased police presence and routine staff patrols.

RESOLUTION NO. 4228
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
AUBURN, WASHINGTON, AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR TO
ACCEPT A GRANT FROM THE WASHINGTON STATE
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION FOR SAFE
ROUTES TO SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS AT OLYMPIC
MIDDLE SCHOOL
WHEREAS, the City desires to increase safety in school zones; and
WHEREAS, Olympic Middle School has a significant number of elementary,
middle, and high school students walking to and from the school site; and
WHEREAS, the City in partnership with the Auburn School District applied for and
was granted a federal Safe Routes to School grant through the Washington State
Department of Transportation (WSDOT) in the amount of $185,000 to finance a non-
motorized path on the east side of H Street SE, crosswalks, lighting, other safety
improvements, educational outreach, and enforcement activities; and
WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the City to use grant monies to finance
safety improvements.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUBURN,
WASHINGTON, HEREBY RESOLVES as follows:
Section 1. That the Mayor is hereby authorized to accept the WSDOT grant for
$185,000, of which $170,000 is estimated for engineering improvements administered
through the City and $15,000 is estimated for engineering, educational, and
enforcement activities administered through the Auburn School District.

Section 2. That the Mayor is authorized to implement such other administrative
procedures as may be necessary to carry out the directives of this legislation.
Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect and be in full force upon
passage and signatures hereon.
