Meeting Minutes
Present: Nancy Colson, Pat Gallagher, Laurel Siegmund, Linda Elliott, Pat Judd, Leslie Moore,

I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions Approval of Minutes
Chair Nancy Colson called the meeting to order at 4:35 pm. Ms. Colson called for
approval of the April minutes. Commissioner Linda Elliott moved the minutes be
approved as submitted. Commissioner Tanya Rottle seconded the motion. Motion
approved.
II. Staff Report: Final 08/09 BRAVO Report
Cultural Arts Manager Laurie Rose reviewed a financial/attendance report for 2008/2009
BRAVO Season. The 2009/10 BRAVO season will feature 4 or 5 performances. Ms.
Rose also noted that 4-Culture has received stimulus money through the National
Endowment for the Arts and will be likely re-granting the funds to local arts agencies
which would allow for an additional performance in Fall.
III. Introduction of Lilly Brinker, Auburn International Farmers Market
Lilly Brinker, Manager of the Auburn International Farmers Market provided an overview
of the upcoming Farmers Market and encouraged the Commissioners to support the
market by helping to let people within their communities know about this new event.
Commissioner ponna Smart inquired to how the Arts Commission could support the
market. Ms. Brinker said she would put the arts teacher who is coordinating a student art
exhibit for the market in touch with the commission. Ms. Brinker emphasized that word of
mouth was the most important marketing tool and for the commissioners to talk to their
neighbors, family and community to come and support the market. Also if any one was
interested in volunteering for day-of tasks or if knew of any vendors that may be
interested to contact her directly.
IV. Committee Reports
Arts Education Committee
Ms. Colson noted that the previous evening at City Council the Mayor proclaimed May
as Art Education Month and that she, Commission Vice Chair Leslie Moore and arts staff
accept the proclamation on the Commission's behalf. Ms. Smart noted that the previous
week, on April 27, she and Visual/Public Art Coordinator Maija McKnight also presented
to the Auburn Schoot District Board and asked for them also proclaim May as Arts
Education Month.
Ms. Smart continued, reporting that she and Ms. McKnight had met with Gina Sandland,
an art instructor at Auburn Riverside High School and art educator liaison for Auburn
School District High Schools and Middle Schools. The art instructors regularly
communicate to identify opportunities for their students and also more effectively
coordinate curriculum. Together we identified a variety of opportunities where the
commission can collaborate with Auburn School District. Ms. Smart additionally noted,
that the Arts Education Committee will likely change the time of day in order to
accommodate educator schedules for participation. Councilmember Rich Wagner
inquired if the School District was receptive to the idea of that art can be interdisciplinary
and integrated into various subjects, and also that the term "arts" refers to both
performing, music, and visual. Ms. Rottle mentioned that the School District recently
posted survey results which asked community members, educators, staff and
administrators to rank the importance of various topics in order to provide input about
spending priorities. Additional information and the results can be found at the following

Ms. Rose mentioned that in 2010 the Opera in Schools program will be back in the
Auburn School District. This program is run by the Seattle Opera's outreach division and
is a statewide program. Commissioner Tanya Rottle inquired if the program was for the
5th Grade and noted concern because of the various school initiatives all being funneled
through the 5th grade and is a very busy time
Public Art Committee
Commissioner Pat Gallagher reported that the public artwork at the Golf Course was
installed and nearly complete. A few final items remain including light, signage, and
sealing the base. The dedication is scheduled for Wednesday, June 3rd at 5:30 pm.
The titles of the two separate, but related sculptures are "Swing" and "FlighY".
Ms. McKnight noted that the next committee meeting would focus on examples of
various downtown art plans and discussing next steps for the commission.
Ms. Rose reported that she requested Council Member Lynn Norman and Councilman
Wagner to outline the various aspects of the Puyallup public art program that resonated
with Auburn City Council. Mr. Wagner described a variety of elements and discussion
followed.
Visual Art Committee
Commissioner Laurel Siegmund reported that the Visual Art Committee has reviewed
applications of teaching artists for the July 25th, ArtRageous Event. Ms. McKnight noted
that invitations to participate have been extended to 11 artists representing a variety of
media. Additionally, the festival will include a variety of activities and art experiences
being coordinated through the 4-Culture Site Specific Program. A variety of local
organizations have also been invited to attend and present a hands on-activity.
Commissioner Leslie Moore asked if the activities would be for all ages and Ms.
McKnight responded that the committee carefully selected artists in order to provide a
variety of experiences for a variety of age groups. Discussion followed on marketing and
future expectations of this festival.
V. Other New Business
Laurie Rose noted that she would be on vacation from May 14 - June 1 and that
inquiries during this time should be directed to Ms. McKnight.
Ms. Rose mentioned that "Discovering Auburn" is scheduled for June 6-14. This year
the art focus will be on the exhibit in The Ave lobby and the Comedy at The Ave on June
12.
Ms. Rose noted that on May 13 at 6 pm, SOCO Culture is hosting a workshop at the
Burien Community Center specifically for arts commissioners and that all are
encouraged to attend.
Ms. McKnight noted that there are two upcoming artist receptions, Thursday, May 14 at
the City Hall Gallery, 5:30 - 7 pm for artists Dennis Harrison, Stephanie Atlee, and Ellen
Witebsky and Tuesday, May 19 at Auburn Avenue Theater; 6- 7:30 for Auburn
photographers, Linda Hatcher, Jay Galvin and Dan Wright.
