HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-14-1998Auburn Arts Commission Monday, September 14, 1998 MINUTES Commissioners Present: Herman Ansingh, Ron'Carson, Paul DodSworth, Bonnie Egbert, Don Gardner, Cheryl Hosking, Bobby Medina, Lynn Norman, Pam Smith, Gertrude Sprenger Commissioners Excused: Barbie Sharrard Staff Present: Josie Emmons and Susan Sagawa Others Present: Nancy Mee, Dennis Evans~ Vicki Scuri Introductions and approval of minutes Chair Norman called the meeting to order at 4:35pm. She asked the minutes be approved as mailed. Commissioner Ansingh moved the minutes be approved. Motion seconded by Commissioner Egbert. MOTION PASSED II. Chair Norman reminded the members of the Commission that the annual plarming meeting would take place September 21. There will be a King County Arts Roundtable in Federal Way on September 16. All Commissioners are welcome to attend. The Evergreen City Ballet will hold its first auction on October 3. The Commission is trying to put together a table for the auction. All those interested in attending should contact Josie Emmons. III. Committee Reports There will be a BRAVO! Marketing Committee meeting on September 15. Pam Smith repOrted on the Community Organizational Support Program. This is a program which redistributes grant monies from the King County Arts Commission to Auburn Arts Organizations. The Panel Review comments were distributed in the Commissioners packets. Commissioner Smith stated that the panel process was extremely informative and educational for both the organizations and the panel review members themselves. She presented to the Commission, on behalf of the panel the following recommendations: Funding to Evergreen City Ballet, $2000; Funding to Auburn Symphony Association $2,000; Funding to It Plays in Peoria Productions, $1,000; Funding to Uniquely Auburn, $750; Funding to the Auburn Valley Artists Association, $250. The request by Puget Sound Musical Theatre was not recommended for funding due to the fact that the project had already been completed at the time of the request and did not fit the guidelines as approved by the Commission. Staff is seeking ways to assist PSMT in other programs. Commissioner Sprenger moved that the panel's recommendations be approved. MOTION PASSED IV. Vo Staff Reports Josie Emmons repOrted that 238 early fullsubscriptions had been received for BRAVO! Marketing efforts are continuting. The posters for the Auburn Symphony are being distributed. Josie Emmons introduced artists Nancy Mee and Dennis Evans, the artist team working on the Auburn Library Project. The description of the work is attached. The Commission expressed pleasure with the entire concept. Commissioner Carson moved the Evans/Mee proposal be approved. Commissioner Dodsworth seconded the motion. MOTION PASSED Josie Emmons welcomed back to the Commission artist Vicki Scuri who has been contracted by Sound Transit to work on the team designing the Auburn Transit Station. Ms. Scuri presented preliminary thematic ideas for the station. These ideas centered on Auburn's heritage of being a truck farming community. Commissioners expressed initial support for the concepts which will be worked into the station design. Ms. Scuri also presented the Public Art Plan which will be incorporated into the City's Downtown Plan. Commissioners expressed approval of this component. There was no other business. The meeting adjourned at 6:30pm.
