HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-12-1998Auburn Arts Commission Monday, October 12, 1998 MINUTES Commissioners present: Herman Ansingh, Ron Carson,' Paul Dodsworth, Bonnie Egbert, Don Gardner, Cheryl Hosking, Lynn Norman, Barbie Sharrard, Gertie Sprenger. Commissioners absent: Bobby Medina (excused) Chair Norman asked the minutes be approved as mailed. It was noted and amended that Barbie Sharrard had been present at the last meeting. Commissioner Dodsworth moved the minutes be approved. Motion seconded by Commissioner Gardner. MOTION APPROVED II. III. Chair's report Chair Norman invited Commissioner Sharrard to present an overview of the "Review of Planning Meeting", a 3-page hand out document that Commissioner Sharrard had compiled from the Board retreat in October. Members of the Commission were encouraged to ask questions. Staff member Josie Emmons thanked Sharrard for her work. Chair Norman presented a copy of a fundraising letter for the Auburn Symphony Orchestra that was sent out to the Auburn Chamber mailing list. Committee Reports A. BRAVO! Marketing Committee. Commissioner Don Gardner presented ideas that the BRAVO! Marketing Committee had come up with to address new ways of selling tickets for the series, attracting new audiences and making more attractive programming. Staff member Susan Sagawa distributed ticket statistics to date for the series and for the upcoming Symphony concert. Each Commissioner reported on their telephone survey results to past subscribers. Commissioner Gertie Sprenger invited people to attend the first m~eting of the new Auburn Symphony Guild to be held at the School Administration Building, Thursday at 7 p.m. Josie Emmons expressed the need for the Guild volunteers to do concessions at the performances, and asked for Commissioner's approval to purchase cookies from Mostly Muffins, in Kent. Moved by Commissioner Dodsworth, motion seconded by Commissioner Sprenger. IV. Mo MOTION APPROVED B. Volunteers Commissioner Cheryl Hosking reported that she has recruited 25 volunteers to help with the two Symphony performances, and requested names of anyone else who may be interested in volunteering. C. Visual Arts Commissioner Ron Carson announced details and deadline for the upcoming jurying of artists to be selected for the 1999 Gallery Exhibition program. Staff Reports Josie Emmons gave an update on the current public art project at the new library. The participating artists - Nancy Mee and Dennis Evans - have had their proposal fully accepted by all of the participating agencies. Susan Sagawa gave an update on the current exhibition in City Hall Gallery, and information on the upcoming December exhibition -- a display of original paintings by children's illustrator Christine Lamb. New Business Josie Emmons announced there is to be an advocacy workshop on November 16, 5:30 p.m., at the Kent Senior Activity Center. This will be lead by Gretchen Johnston, Executive Director of the Washington State Arts Alliance. Commissioners were invited to participate. Josie Emmons also reported that the auction for the Evergreen City Ballet went well and that ECB had met their fundraising target for the auction. There was no other business. The meeting adjourned at 6:30 p.m. The next meeting will be November 9 at 4:30 p.m., Conference Room 1.
