HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-08-1999Auburn Arts Commission Monday, March 8, 1999 MINUTES Commissioners present: Herman Ansingh, Ron Carson, Paul Dodworth, Bonnie Egbert, Don Gardner, Cheryl Hosking, Lynn Norman, Barbie Sharrard, Pam Smith, Gertie Sprenger, John Stanphill. Commissioners absent: Bobby Medina (excused). Other people in attendance: Dick Deal, Nancy Krause I. Introduction and approval of minutes. Chair Norman asked that the minutes be approved as mailed. Don Gardner noted and amended that he had not been present at the last meeting. Commissioner Bonnie Egbert moved that the minutes be approved. Commissioner Gertie Sprenger seconded the motion. MOTION APPROVED Chair Norman introduced Nancy Krause, Downtown Association, and Dick Deal, Director of Parks and Recreation. Chair Norman congratulated Susan Sagawa on her recent US citizenship. II. Chair's report A. Chair Norman led a discussion of updates on the RTA Stati°n. Dick Deal reported that artist Vicki Scurri is still in the design process and will consider other artistic options in addition to lighting fixtures. Ms. Scurri also now has a contract with the architects and is communicating more closely with them. The commissioners discussed the need to explore options besides lighting. They would like to look at what other transit stations are doing with the same budget There was also discussion about how the City also recently received a grant for improvements on "A" Street. Nancy Krause, Downtown Association, reported that the Downtown Association is looking at what is available for trash receptacles, benches, etc. Ms. Krause invited commissioners to attend the next meeting of the design committee, March 17 at 8:30-10:00 AM in Conference Room 2, and the Downtown Association meeting, March 17 at 4:30-6:30 PM in the Council Chambers. Herman Ansingh volunteered to attend the Design Committee meeting, and Lynn Norman volunteered to attend the Downtown Association meeting. ~ B. Susan Sagawa gave the following updates on the "1999 Planned projects" handout..BRAVO!: There will be four performances in the fall of the 1999/2000 BRAVO! series. They are: Seattle Opera Young Artists Recital, 10/9; Auburn Symphony, 10/23-24; Puget Sound Musical Theatre, 12/3-4 at Auburn III. A. Riverside Theater; and Tim Noah, 12/18. There was also interest expressed in having Encore Playhouse theater produce a play in Spring 2000..Grantwriting: Artist in residence programs in the past have been difficult to coordinate due to lack of staffing and matching school funds. There followed a discussion proposing that BRAVO! artists hold workshops in schools and community centers as part of their contract. Lynn Norman requested that applications for King County Arts Commission Sustained Support Program Grants be sent out earlier to allow local art organizations more time to apply. The application would state that the grants are dependent on the city of Auburn receiving monies from King County Arts Commission. Millennium Project: Lynn Norman requested that the Arts Commission reconvene its millennium committee, in order to come up with a plan of projects that the Arts Commission wants to accomplish. The members of the committee are Pam Smith, Barbie Sharrard, Gertie Sprenger, Lynn Norman, and Cheryl Hosking. Lynn Norman will schedule the meeting. Art i_____Qn Public Places: Groundbreaking for the Auburn Library will take place on Saturday, March 13 at 10 AM. The proposed art for the Skatepark involves figures on tall flagpoles which will cast shadows into the 'skating bowl. No artists are currently wOrking oh the C Street offramp. The project needs to be completed before a location for art can be determined. Youth proqram~: The summer drama project with PSMT is being o~ganized by the Auburn School District. Staff Reports .BRAVO! 98/99. Susan Sagawa reported on attendance for the recent New Pickle Circus performance. There was a housecount of 850, 50 more than last year's attendance of the Peking Acrobats. The discount coupons for the Sunday performance received a good response. Marketing ideas for Romeo and Ju/iet will focus on the Thursday night performance, which currently has much lower ticket sales than Friday night. The staff is producing discount flyers and student ticket vouchers for the Thursday night performance. Other ideas for marketing were discussed, including discounts for Boeing employees, attachments to Rottle's bills, and flyers in the Chamber of Commerce office. _BRAVO! 99/2000. Another booking possibility is the Russian Radost Folk Ensemble's show "Villages through the Generations". This would appeal to the growing Russian immigration within south King County. 18 people attended the Grant Writinq Workshop on March 3, including participants from local art organizations and several individual artists. The workshop was organized by the Arts IV. Commission in collaboration with Michael Killoren of the King County Arts Commission. Other business Don Gardner announced that Richard Gilewitz, acoustic guitar, will give a free concert at Green River Music on MarCh 15 at 7:00: PM There was no other business. The meeting adjourned at 6:00 PM. The next meeting will be Monday, April 12 at 4:30 PM in Conference Room 1.
