MINUTES
Commissioners present: Herman Ansingh, Paul Dodsworth, Bonnie Egbert, Don Gardner,
Steve LePenske, Gertie Sprenger and Pam Smith
Commissioners absent: Bobby Medina, Lynn Norman, Barbie Sharrard and John Stanphill (all
excused)
Staff present: Lori Corso, cultural programs specialist; Staff absent: Susan Sagawa, cultural
programs manager (on vacation)
Chair Paul Dodsworth called the meeting to order at 4:38 p.m.
I. Introduction and Approval of Minutes
Commissioner Egbert moved that the minutes be approved as submitted. Commissioner
Ansingh seconded the motion.

Update on BRAVO! 1999/2000
BRAVO! 2000/2001
Lori Corso reported on BRAVO! performances in April. Attendance was good at all three
events: The Peking Acrobats, Bronn Journey and Clay Martin's Puppet Theatre. Season ticket
revenue is around $63,000. In recognition of Mother's Day, commissioners and volunteers
will help hand out carnations to women attending the performance by Radost Folk Ensemble,
May 14.
Staff is building a season with eight family events and four BRAVO! Kids shows. To date, the
proposed performances are:
· A cappella group m-pact with local a cappella groups, Oct. 13
· Seattle Opera's Young Singers, Oct. 14
· Auburn Symphony Orchestra, Oct. 28 and 29
· Harry Potter show to open BRAVO! Kids, Nov. 4
Tim Noah's Holiday Show BRAVO! Kids, Dec. 16
· Auburn Symphony Orchestra, Feb. 17 and 18
· Encore Playhouse's production of"Man of La Mancha," March 2 and 3
· Evergreen City Ballet's performance of"Giselle," April 7 and 8
The commission discussed other performance possibilities for spring 2001, including an Irish
step dancing group, Spectrum Dance Theatre and two more BRAVO! Kids performances.

III. Public Art
Senior Center project
A panel interviewed five public artists, April 18, and selected Ries Niemi of Skagit Valley to
complete public art at the neW senior center. Ries' public art work is featured at Safeco Field.
He will start work with the architect when the contract is completed. Commissioners Ansingh
and LePenske served on the selection panel.
J Street Banner
Artist Diane Aurigemma of High Flying Banners will lead workshops with kids a local school to
design banners, which will hang from lamp posts on either side of J Street, in front of the new
library on Auburn Way and the park road that rUns by the museum. Students will be asked to
create designs based on what they see in parks today and in the future.
Sundial project
A panel will interview three artists on Thursday, May 25, 2:30 to 5 p.m. The project, located in
Les Gove park, is a joint commission between the city and local service organizations.
Sound Transit poster project
Lori Como and Commissioner LePenske attended a meeting at Sound Transit's office May 5 to
select an artist to create a poster celebrating the arrival of commuter rail in Auburn. Sound
Transit will host a second meeting June 2 to review artist proposals for the poster project. The
original posters will celebrate the opening of seven Seattle Sounder commuter rail stations
between Tacoma and Seattle. Each station's poster will feature an original image. Auburn will
exhibit the seven works in the City Hall Gallery as part of the 2001 gallery lineup.
IV. 2000 Arts Organization Support Program
Lori Corso distributed copies of a letter from King County granting the commission $12,000 for
its sustained support program. Staff distributed grant applications to local arts agencies. The
application deadline is Friday, June 9. A news release announcing the program went out. A
panel will meet to review applications, Thursday, June 15, 2 to 5 p.m. Panelists include
commissioners LePenske, Norman, Smith and Sprenger.
V. Other Business
Commissioner Smith presented the possibility of the commission's involvement in presenting a
pantomime based on "Beauty and the Beast." Funding could come from the commission's youth
arts project budget. The work would feature a rash of local characters and references.
There was no other business. The meeting adjourned at 5:50 p.m. The next regular meeting is
Monday, June 12, 4 p.m. in Conference Room 1.
