Public Art Presentation by Ries Niemi of proposed sundial project Niemi presented a revised proposal for the sundial project at Les Gove Park, addressing the commission's desire to minimize the potential for vandalism. Niemi's proposed sundial is a large picnic table with the top functioning as a sundial. The table would be placed in the grassy area between the old and new senior centers. Niemi originally proposed that the table be made of old-growth wood, stone and metal, with the metal gnomon sitting near the center of the table. In addition to a functioning sundial, the table's surface would feature text about the cosmos. The revised proposal places metal panels and more stone on top of the wood surface. Along the sides of the benches, Niemi plans to inlay brass lettering listing local service organizations. Commissioner Herman Ansingh moved to accept the Niemi's proposal as presented with the caveat that the gnomon is constructed in a fashion that it doesn't pose safety hazards. Commissioner Anne Baunach seconded the motion. MOTION APPROVED J Street/Les Gove Park entryway public art project.
