Introductions and approval of minutes Chair Steve LePenske called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. and asked that the January minutes be approved as mailed. Commissioner Herman Ansingh moved that the minutes be approved. Commissioner Gertie Sprenger seconded the motion MOTION APPROVED II. Report on public art and selection of artists for the Sound Transit plaza and garage Susan Sagawa reported that the commission's public art committee selected three artists to present proposals for the Sound Transit Plaza. The artists are Nancy Mooslin of Los Angeles, Calif.; Bruce West of Portland, Ore.; and artist team Jean Whitesavage and Nick Lyle of Seattle. The committee selected Whitesavage and Lyle to present a proposal for the parking garage. Sound Transit will pay the artists $1,000 each to develop proposals for the plaza. The artists will present their proposals for the plaza to the commission at its March 12 meeting. The commission will meet at 2 p.m. to accommodate the artists' travel. Whitesavage and Lyle will irmnediately start work with the architect on the parking garage. Phillip Levine is finishing construction of the model for "Threshold," the entryway piece at Les Gove Park. Levine has agreed for a small fee to let the city have commercial use of the image to use as a logo to promote the Auburn Community Campus at Les Gove Park. Once the piece is cast, the graphic artist will begin designing the logo to use on stationary, signage and for other promotional purposes. Ries Niemi's millennium sundial table is ahead of schedule. Review and selection of commissioners to sub-committees for 2001 The commission appointed members to five subcommittees, however commission members may contribute to and/or attend any subcommittee meetings. See attachment. IV. Update on Shades of Summer concerts, 4th of July Festival and BRAVO! 2001-2002 Season Lori Patrick reported the groups selected to date for the Shades of Summer concert series and Fourth of July Festival. See attachment, A newly renovated senior center, a new wing of the White River Valley Museum and the millennium sundial table are all scheduled to be complete by the Fourth. The Chihuly Raffle winner will also be announced at the festival. BRAVO! 2001-2002 Susan Sagawa reported on groups scheduled to date.' In all, eight performances will make up the main stage portion of BRAVO! Due to the popularity of BRAVO! Kids, staff plans to add two more performances for a total of six BRAVO! Kids shows. Susan Sagawa attended a meeting of the King County Performance Network last week. The network serves as a mini-booking conference for King County arts agencies. Block booking reduces fees and helps artists get multiple shows throughout the area. This season, the county granted $5,000 to BRAVO! to present artists in the network. The network is in the process of selecting arts groups for the 2001/2002 season. V. Other business Grant Workshops The arts commission will collaborate with the King County Arts Commission in presenting a workshop on King County Special Projects grants, Wednesday, March 7, 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Room 1. A workshop on Sustained Support grants is set for Tuesday, Sept. 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. King County Arts Commission meeting Commissioner Lynn Norman said the King County Arts Commission is still interested in hosting a community meeting in Auburn. Potential meeting locations are Auburn Riverside Theatre, the City Council Chambers or Conference Room 1. (more) Arts Commission minutes Page 3 Sustained Support Funding King County has changed its annual deadline for its sustained support funding program: the deadline for submitting final invoices has moved from December to October. The commission will receive $12,000 in 2001, which it will re-grant to arts organizations. Arts in Education Robin Logan, principal at Gildo Ray Elementary School, requests that the commission write a grant to King County to receive funding for an arts-in-education program benefiting Gildo Ray. To receive funding, the school must collaborate with a local arts agency, such as the commission. Logan would like to work with four artists at the school. The artists would be from the 2001-2002 BRAVO! Season. If the commission receives funding, it will work with the school on a pilot- project basis. If the program is successful, the commission could expand the program to include other schools in the district in following years. Commissioner Bonnie Egbert moved that the commission accept Gildo Ray Elementary School's proposal that the commission seek grant dollars to fund a joint arts-in-education program. Commissioner Barbie Sharrard seconded the motion. MOTION APPROVED Commissioners comments Commissioner Kristen Brock said the recent visit to public artist Ries Niemi's studio was wonderful. The millennium sundial table is spectacular and includes stunning stonework and metal inlays. Commissioner Lynn Norman said South County Journal Publisher John Perry reported that the BRAVO! media sponsorship with the paper has been very successful. Perry has expressed interest in continuing the paper's BRAVO! sponsorship in the 2001-2002 season. There was no other business. The meeting adjourned at 6:14 p.m. The next regular meeting is Monday, March. 12, 2 p.m. in Conference Room 1. NOTE TIME CHANGE!
