Minutes

Chair Steve LePenske called the meeting to order at 2 p.m.
I. Artist presentations of proposals for the Sound Transit Plaza
The commission interviewed and reviewed three proposals from artists for artwork for
the plaza at the Auburn Sound Transit Station: Jean Whitesavage and Nick Lyle of
Seattle; Nancy Mooslin of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Bruce West of Portland, Ore.
Out of a total of 160 possible points, the panel of commissioners awarded the following
points to each artist.
Whitesavage and Lyle: 150
Mooslin: 122
West: 155.5
Bruce West received the highest point total, and the consensus of the panel was to accept
his proposal. He will build two stainless steel sculptures: three pear and two strawberry
cross sections, cut and arranged as a still life. The sculptures will also function as
informal seating.
II. Approval of minutes
Commissioner Paul Dodsworth moved that the February minutes be approved as mailed.
Commissioner Barbie Sharrard seconded the motion.

III.
Update on BRAVO! 2001/2002 Season and King County Cultural
Education grant application
Susan Sagawa, cultural programs manager, reported that she worked with Gildo Ray
Principal Robin Logan to submit a grant to King County to receive funding for a
proposed arts-in-education program to benefit elementary-school children in the Auburn
School District. Three artists from the BRAVO! Season will host workshops, and one
artist will do a two-week residency at Gildo Ray. It is hoped that this will become a
model program for other schools in the district.
Susan offered an update on the upcoming 2001/2002 BRAVO! Season, including an
outstanding dance performance by Native American Dance Theatre. This group has been
scheduled to give a special kids education program for all first graders in the Auburn
School District on Friday, Nov. 30, 11 a.m. at the Performing Arts Center.
IV. Arts Organization Support Grant deadlines
' Applications will go out this week. Eight artists attended a grant workshop last week at
City Hall. The arts commission will receive $12,000 in 2001 from the King County
Sustained Support program, which it will re-grant to local arts organizations.
V. Other business
Lori Patrick, cultural program specialist, proposed changing the vendor fees for the
Fourth of July Festival: a $5 increase in craft booth fees from $25 to $30, no fee for non-
profit booths (the current fee is $12), no change in the $35 fee for food booths.
Commissioner Sharrard moved to accept a $30 fee for craft vendors and to eliminate the
fee for non-profit vendors. Commissioner Dodsworth seconded the motion.
MOTION APPROVED
Commissioners agreed to have staff negotiate a change in the contract for Over the Edge
Productions, which provides the kids' rides at the Fourth of July Festival. Over the Edge
may collect and keep all proceeds from ride ticket sales but accept a lower fee of $1,000.
However, all tickets for the train may not exceed $2 and tickets for the other rides may
not exceed $1. Lori Patrick will follow-up with Over the Edge.
There was no other business. The meeting adjourned at 5:35 p.m. The next regular
meeting is Monday, April 9, 4:30 p.m. in Conference Room 1.
