MINUTES
Commissioners present: Herman Ansingh; Paul Dodsworth; Bonnie Egbert; Steve
LePenske, chair; Barbie Sharrard; Gertie Sprenger; John Stanphill
Commissioners absent: Anne Baunach, Kristen Brock, Don Gardner, Lynn Norman,
Pam Smith (all excused)
Staff present: Dick Deal, parks and recreation director, Lori Patrick, cultural programs
specialist
Staff absent: Susan Sagawa, cultural programs manager (excused)
Commission Chair Steve LePenske called the meeting to order at 4:38 p.m.
I. Approval of minutes
Commissioner Herman Ansingh moved that the June minutes be approved as mailed.
Commissioner Paul Dodsworth seconded the motion.

II. BRAVO! 2001-2002
Lori Patrick reported the season brochure (15,000) went to print today and is due for
delivery on July 20 with a bulk mailing date of July 25. A mailing house will send
the brochure bulk mail to about 10,000 Auburn-area addresses, a Lake Tapps mailing
list, and the BRAVO! mailing list. Commissioners requested brochures to distribute
at service clubs.
IH. Update on Cultural Arts Education program
Loft Patrick reported that BRAVO! performance groups will present residencies and
performances to first- through fifth-grade classes in the Auburn School District.
Staff from Gildo Rey Elementary have submitted a fu'st-draft of a syllabus to Seattle
Opera for the opera's one-week residency, October 22 to 26, with fifth graders at
Gildo Rey and Dick Scobee Elementary. All schools throughout the Puget Sound
who participate in the opera program will use the syllabus. The Opera will direct the
students in a production of"The Magic Flute" at the elementary schools. Linda
Elliott will coordinate the residency at Dick Scobee. Funding for the program
at Dick Scobee will not come out of the arts commission's cultural arts education
grant from King County.

Staff continues to work with American Indian Dance Theatre on a performance for
all third graders in the Auburn School District, Friday, Nov. 30, at 11:30 a.m., at the
Auburn Performing Arts Center.
Lelavision will present "Literacy in Motion," a weeklong residency for fourth
graders. Lelavision has completed many school residencies focusing on literacy
through dance and movement. Dates to be determined.
Puget Sound Musical Theatre will offer a new program for first- and second-
graders that focuses onwriting. Specifically, "How to write a song" and then see it
through production into a musical on stage. Dates to be determined.
The Lelavision and Puget Sound Musical Theatre residencies will result in the kids
giving a performance at the school on the last day of the residency.
IV. Fourth of July and Shades of Summer concerts
Lori Patrick reported that the city's annual Fourth of July Festival was a big success,
despite construction that required shifting the festival layout. The weather was sunny
and warm with an estimated attendance of 6,500. Commissioner agreed recently
installed public art--the sundial table, street banners and Threshold--added to the
festive feel in the park.
The Shades of Summer concert season will kick off Friday, July 13 with the Paul
deLay Band, a well-known Portland blues band led by harmonica legend Paul deLay.
The kids concerts at Les Gove will take place on a new concrete concert pad near the
playground and wading pool. The first concert is Wednesday, July 18, noon,
featuring The Toucans, a steel dram band.
V. Other business
On his next visit to Portland, Commissioner LePenske said he plans a visit to
artist Bruce West's studio. West is completing the public art for the Auburn
Sound Transit Plaza.
Artist team Jean Whitesavage and Nick Lyle of Seattle, along with Sound
Transit staff, will present their public art proposal for the Sound Transit
parking garage at the Aug. 13 commission meeting. They will be first on the
agenda.
There was no other business. The meeting adjourned at 5:21 p.m. The next regular
meeting is Monday, Aug. 13, 4:30 p.m. in COnference Room 1.
