MOTION APPROVED
II. Public Arts Project Status
Cultural Programs Manager Susan Gochoel reported Mayor Pete Lewis approved the use
of money in the City's 328 fund for the design and fabrication of new winter street
banners. Gochoel said she contracted with Volare Banners and Design to design and
fabricate 49 banners and lead a student workshop for a total fee of $12,000. They will
lead a workshop, Sept. 23, with 20 fourth- and fifth-grade students at Gildo Rey
Elementary School. Students will create their own 2' x 2' winter-themed banners they
will be able to take home. Photographs of the students with their completed banners will
be the subject of an exhibition in the City Hall Gallery in December. The exhibition will
highlight the commission's arts education program. The city plans to install the banners
in the downtown core in late November. Gochoel reported that the Auburn Downtown
Association is seeking funds to purchase a set of banners to compliment the
commission's winter banners.
Gochoel reported artist Paul Sorey is fabricating the series of metal cutout figures linking
downtown's Main Street to the Sound Transit station. She plans to visit his studio soon.
The city has received approval from four of the five business owners where the metal
figures are proposed for installation on nearby sidewalks. Gochoel is working with the
engineering department to contact the fifth business owner.
Gochoel sent commissioners via mail a copy of Sorey's drawings and the proposed
installation sites.
