II. Evergreen City, Ballet
Cultural Programs Manager Susan Gochoel reported there was a miscommunication
between the Evergreen City Ballet (ECB) and commission staff regarding how ticket
sales would be structured for the BRAVO!-sponsored performance of the ballet's
"Nutcracker," 1:30 p.m., Dec. 14. Gochoel said she met with Darrelynn Hallowell,
executive director of the Evergreen City Ballet, and both agreed the arts commission
would discontinue its sale of tickets to the performance. Hallowell said she
misunderstood the original performance contract, and expected the commission to sell a
limited number of tickets to BRAVO! subscribers for the Dec. 14 performance, leaving
the majority of tickets for the ballet to sell. Gochoel reported the commission has sold a
few hundred tickets to the Dec. 14 performance, but agreed to turn over all additional
ticket sales to ECB. Gochoel worked with the City Attomey'.s office to draft an

amendment to the original performance contract. She passed around a draft of the letter
for commissioners to review. Hallowell stated she wants "to continue the ballet's good
working relationship" with the arts commission. Commissioners thanked ECB
representatives for attending the meeting and voiced their continued support of the ballet.
Gochoel said arts commission staff will be present at the Dec. 14 "Nutcracker"
performance to provide box office support, particularly as it relates to BRAVO!
subscribers.
IlL Slides of artwork/Artists for 2004 exhibitions at City Hall
Gochoel showed slides of work by artists selected by the commission's visual arts
committee to show in the City Hall Gallery in 2004. The gallery will feature .the annual
Auburn School District's Council of PTA Reflections program in January with the theme,
"I am really happy when ...," followed by six exhibitions, including a group exhibit of
mixed media paintings and drawings by a trio of regional artists.
IV.
Public Art: downtown winter banners and call for art at
Lakeland
Gochoel passed around cOlor copies of the winter banner designs created by 20 fourth-
and fifth-grade students at Gildo Rey Elementary School during a September workshop
led by Volare Banners and Design. Students created their own 2' x 2' winter-themed
banners. Photographs of the students with their completed banners will be the subject of
an exhibition in the City Hall Gallery in December. The exhibition will highlight the
commission's arts education program. The City plans to install the 49 banners in the
downtown core the week after Thanksgiving. Volare's $12,000 fee funded the works.hop,
design and fabrication of the banners, Gochoel said.
Gochoel reported more than a dozen artists have submitted proposals for public art at the
junction of Lakeland Hills Way and Evergreen Way. The total project budget is $30,000.
A panel of commissioners will review the applications, Friday, Nov. 14, 1 to 5 p.m. in
Conference Room 1 at City Hall and select three finalists to interview, Tuesday, Nov. 25.

Gochoel confirmed Commission Chair Anne Baunach will serve a second term as chair

District, received the majority of its funding from a $4,000 arts education grant issues by
the Cultural Development Authority of King County. Commissioner Barbie Sharrard
inquired about reaching out to additional elementary schools. The commission aims to
reach elementary students throughout the district with its all-school BRAVO!
performances at the Auburn Performing Arts Center, she said.

· Cultural Programs Coordinator Lori Patrick said Ilalko Elementary is
looking for judges to judge Reflections entries.

leaving an open seat. Gochoel requested the commission narrow
