Introductions and approval of minutes Due to a lack of a quorum Chair Anne Banauch requested the commission postpone its vote to approve the November minutes until later in the meeting. II. Public Art At a Nov. 14 meeting, a panel of commissioners; Karen Sartell of the Lakeland Hills Association; and Duanna Richards, executive assistant to the Mayor, reviewed more than a dozen artist applications in response to the City's call for public art at the junction of Lakeland Hills Way and Evergreen Way. The panel selected four finalists to return for interviews on Nov. 25, and at that meeting narrowed the field to two candidates. Cultural Programs Manager Susan Gochoel said the panel had difficulty choosing between the two finalists and for a small design fee, invited the candidates to develop modelS to present to the panel on Jan. 7. Due to non-compliance with federal ADA requirements, three of the five metal sculptures of cut-out figures recently installed by artist Paul Sorey will have to be re-sited, Gochoel reported. The pieces will move to two approved sites in planting beds at the Sound Transit Station plaza. Sorey is redesigning the base of each piece for ground installation. Gochoel is working with Sound Transit and the city's public works and engineering departments to move the pieces. Despite the need for relocation, Gochoel said the sculptures have been very well received. Gochoel reported Parks and Recreation Director Daryl Faber has requested the commission submit a list of prioritized potential public art sites for 2004 in time for the City Council's Planning and Community Development Committee (PCDC) meeting, Feb. 9. She also said the Cultural Development Authority of King County will present its presentation, "Public Art as Infrastructure" at the Feb. 23 PCDC meeting. (more) Auburn Arts Commission December 2003 minutes, page 2 Commissioner Lynn Norman suggested the arts commission consider a presentation to the City Council to thank the council for its support and offer an update of commission projects. Gochoel said city officials continue to research methods for hanging two large banners from the five-story Sound Transit parking garage. The banners would face downtown and Highway 18 and provide a great marketing vehicle. III. Arts Commission: Resignation of Lynn Norman, application process for new commissioners and council liaison Commissioners thanked Norman, who was recently eleCted to the City Council, for her years of dedicated service. Norman said she has been honored to serve on a commission considered regionally to be a model for local arts agencies. Gochoel reported the Mayor's Office is considering appointing City Council members to serve as liaisons to the City's commissions and committees and is working on guidelines outlining a liaison's role. The Mayor's Office is also revamping the application process for open seats on City commissions and committees. A recent issue of The Auburn Reporter listed vacant seats on City commissions. Citizens may apply by completing a volunteer application and submitting to a background check. Gochoel invited arts commissioners to submit names of potential commissioners for consideration to fill the seat vacated by Norman. Commissioners discussed candidates and submitted several names. Gochoel agreed to follow-up with the potential candidates to gauge interest and invite them to submit an application. While the Mayor makes the final decision on appointment, the commission may attach recommendations to a candidate's application. IV. Update on BRAVO! Season The Nov. 21 performance by the Shangri-La Chinese Acrobats sold out, and staff had to turn people away at the door, Gochoel said. The morning school performance was a success. Gochoel passed around thank-you letters from amazed Buena Vista Elementary students who attended the show. BRAVO! 2003-2004 Season ticket revenue has exceeded projections at $46,000 three months into the season. Revenue for the fiscal year is $66,000 and $80,756 including grant funding, Gochoel reported. Auburn Rotary recently received a grant to purchase a block of 240 BRAVO! Kids tickets for distribution in the community, Gochoel said.
