''''" o:::::.~' "''1i ,"" ., . -->-' - .-WASHINGTON / * City of Auburn Arts Commission Monday, December 12,2005,4:30 pm Home of Barbie Sharrard, 100 T St. NE, Auburn Meeting Minutes Commissioners present: Chair Bonnie Egbert, Vice Chair Kristen Brock, Herman Ansingh, Anne Baunach, Nancy Colson, Linda Elliott, Don Gardner, Pat Gallagher, Steve LePenske, Barbie Sharrard Commissioners absent (excused): Pam Smith, Amanda Flanery Staff present: Lori Patrick, Cultural Arts Manager; Laurie Rose, Cultural Arts Coordinator Call to order: Commission Chair Bonnie Egbert called the meeting to order at 4:45 p.m. I. Approval of October and November Minutes & Introductions October and November minutes: Commissioner Bonnie Egbert called for approval of the October and November minutes. Commissioner Don Gardner moved the October and November minutes be approved as submitted. Commissioner Herman Ansingh seconded the motion. MOTION APPROVED. II. Election of 2006 Vice Chair Ms. Egbert called for a vote of the Vice Chair for 2006. Nominees are commissioners Ansingh, Barbie Sharrard and Pam Smith. Dr. Ansingh and Ms. Sharrard confirmed their willingness and availability to serve as the 2006 Vice Chair. Cultural Arts Manager Lori Patrick confirmed for the absent Ms. Smith her acceptance of her nomination. The vote was conducted by secret ballot. Ms. Smith was eiected 2006 Vice Chair of the Auburn Arts Commission. Current Vice Chair Kristen Brock will advance to the Commission Chairmanship in 2006 per commission bylaws. III. 2006 Commission Committee Assignments Ms. Patrick distributed proposed commission committee assignments for 2006. Commissioners reviewed the assignments and discussion followed. IV. Public Art: 2006 Project at West Main; Inventory and Maintenance Ms. Patrick confirmed the 2006 public art project in conjunction with the West Main non- motorized improvement project has been approved by City Council. A call for artists will go out for sidewalk surface treatments, a crosswalk treatment where the Interurban Trail crosses West Main Street and the potential for bollard designs at the Interurban Trail. A drinking fountain was determined to be cost prohibitive. A call to artists will be posted the week of December 18 with an application deadline of mid-January. Dec. 12,2005, City of Auburn Arts Commission Meeting Minutes Page 1 of 2 The City Council approved funding for a comprehensive inventory and maintenance schedule of the City's public art collection in the 2006 budget. Staff will consult with 4Culture regarding standard operating procedures for cataloging public art and developing maintenance schedules. Discussion followed. V. BRAVO! Marketing Update; 2006/07 Season Booking Update Cultural Arts Coordinator Laurie Rose reported total BRAVO! ticket sales to date are approximately 70% of the revenue goal for the season, up 10% from last month. The first BRAVO! Kids performance, Snapdragon Puppets' production of The Mousecracker sold out. Single ticket sales for all kids programs are solid and the kids subscription sales exceeded goal by approximately 20%. Ms. Rose cited a strong line-up of quality shows along with a comparatively aggressive marketing campaign for the kids programs as a probable reason for the increased sales numbers. The free Red, White and Blue Holiday Concert was a successful event with 618 attending. Concert-goers donated approximately 10 bins of non-perishable food to the Auburn Food Bank. Discussion followed regarding community feedback concerning the program's content and ticket distribution. The McManus Comedies production of A Fine and Pleasant Misery in November was also a success with 671 attending, exceeding attendance goals. Ms. Patrick reported the Artisans in Schools program conducted by actor Tim Behrens with Auburn High School drama students as being excellent and well received by the participating students. Ms. Patrick reported on the continued progress booking the 2006/07 BRAVO! season. Discussion followed regarding the slate of productions staff is pursuing and potential sponsorship. VI. Summer 2006: Concerts & Cinema Ms. Patrick reported the Auburn Regional Medical Center has agreed to sponsor four outdoor cinema presentations this summer. Staff is working with Com cast to present one other outdoor cinema for a total of five cinema presentations. These will all be held in conjunction with the Shades of Summer Concerts. Ms. Rose is booking the concerts this year. The slate of concerts, and possibly the movies, will be confirmed by the first of February . VII. Other Business: Arts Day 2006 Ms. Patrick announced the state-wide Arts Day will be February 14, 2006. Those interested in joining staff to meet with our elected representatives in Olympia are encouraged to contact Ms. Patrick.
