HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-13-2006 jil. * "'~- '*0",,1 ~ ~ ~/* I WASHINGTON City of Auburn Arts Commission Monday, February 13, 2006, 4:30 pm Meeting Minutes Commissioners present: Chair Kristen Brock, Herman Ansingh, Anne Baunach, Nancy Colson, Bonnie Egbert, Linda Elliott, Amanda Flanery, Don Gardner Commissioners absent (excused): Pam Smith, Pat Gallagher, Steve LePenske, Barbie Sharrard Staff present: Lori Patrick, Cultural Arts Manager; Laurie Rose, Cultural Arts Coordinator; Daryl Faber, Director Parks, Arts & Recreation Call to order: Commission Chair Kristen Brock called the meeting to order at 4:40 p.m. I. Approval of January Minutes; Introductions January minutes: Commission Chair Kristen Brock called for approval of the January minutes. Commissioner Herman Ansingh moved the January minutes be approved as submitted. Commissioner Anne Baunach seconded the motion. MOTION APPROVED. Introductions: Ms. Brock welcomed Parks, Arts and Recreation Director Daryl Faber to the meeting and announced Mr. Faber has an agenda that will be added to Agenda Item II: Public Art project updates. II. Public Art project updates: 2007 Public Art opportunity (added); F St. & Auburn Wy. S.; West Main St. 2007 Public Art proposal Mr. Faber asked the commission consider the new Auburn Golf Course Club House for as a public art project opportunity for 2007. The project is currently in design. Mr. Faber reviewed the proposed design, highlighting several options for public art as an integrated component of the architecture and/or landscape. Discussion followed. F Street & Auburn Way S. Cultural Arts Manager Lori Patrick reported the project at F Street is progressing on schedule. Footings for the sign were poured earlier this month and the sign goes into fabrication next month. The artist determined the originally proposed historic Northern Pacific font, a "serif' style font, proved unreadable for the scale of the project. Last week the public art Feb. 13, 2006, City of Auburn Arts Commission Meeting Minutes Page 1 of 4 panel was given an opportunity to revisit the two font options and agreed the other historic "sans-serif' font is the best option for the scale of the project. W. Main St. Ms. Patrick reported three finalists were selected by the public art panel last month. They are Mary Coss, Kay Kirkpatrick of Seattle, and design team Tom Askman and Lea Anne Lake of Spokane. All three finalists met with staff, members of the public art panel and City project engineer Scott Nutter for a site visit last week. The artists are asked to submit final proposals March 13. Final interviews with the public art panel to review proposals are scheduled for March 16, 1 to 5 p.m. in Council Chambers. The panel will make its recommendation to the Arts Commission at its April meeting. III. Artisans in Schools: Seattle Opera residency; Comerford Irish Dancers master class; Washington State Arts Commission Arts Education Resource Initiative Seattle Opera Young Artists school residency Ms. Patrick announced the Seattle Opera will bring its "Opera Goes to School" program to Pioneer Elementary the week of February 13. The arts commission's education program funded 75 percent of the cost of the residency, with Pioneer Elementary PTA contributing the remaining 25 percent. The opera residency program is a week-long music and perfomnance project instructing students and teachers alike about stage and opera production. All will work with six singers from the opera's Young Artists Program, a music director and a stage manager to build costumes and props and rehearse a 50 minute program, "Theft of the Gold" based "Das Reingold" from Wagner's "The Ring." This year's program is dedicated to Gertrude Sprenger. A public performance will be held at Pioneer Elementary Friday, February 17 at 1 :45 p.m. in their multipurpose auditorium. The program will be featured on the cover of the March 1 Auburn Reporter. Comerford Irish Dancers master class Members of The Comerford Irish Dancers will conduct a master class in traditional Irish step dancing for fifth grade students at Lee Hill and Gildo Rey Elementary schools on Wednesday, March 23 as part of the BRAVO! Artists in Residence program. WA State Arts Commission Arts Education Resources Initiative Ms. Patrick presented Washington State Arts Commission Arts Education Resources Initiative (AERI) final report, assessing arts education in Feb. 13, 2006, City of Auburn Arts Commission Meeting Minutes Page 2 of 4 primary and secondary schools throughout the state. The report's goal is to provide "research-based ideas and support [education professionals]... may use to work toward high quality arts education for all students." Discussion followed. III. Summer events 2006: Summer Sounds & Cinema; Fourth of July; Auburn Idol Summer Sounds & CinemalKids' Summer Sounds Cultural Arts Coordinator Laurie Rose reported the concerts for the Summer Sounds & Cinema, including Kids' Summer Sounds program, have been confirmed and passed around the list for review. Licensing for movie selection has not been confirmed at this date, but is expected to be completed within the next two weeks. The poster is already in design as the "back page ad" for the upcoming Parks, Arts & Recreation Spring/Summer Guide, announcing both music and movies. Ms. Patrick gave a progress report regarding sponsorship for this project. Com cast has agreed to present the first of the five concerts/movies and will provide additional marketing for the project this year. A meeting to finalize title sponsorship and marketing opportunities with Auburn Regional Medical Center is scheduled with staff for next week. Fourth of July Festival Ms. Rose reported all entertainment, but one Kids' Stage act has been confirmed for the 4th of July Festival. Vendor applications go out next month. Auburn Idol The Auburn Downtown Association Sidewalk Sale has been moved from July 13 through 16, to the following week, July 20 through 23. Auburn Idol audition dates are rescheduled accordingly to July 22 & 23 and will be announced in the Spring/Summer Recreation Guide. IV. BRAVO! Marketing Update Cultural Arts Coordinator Laurie Rose reported total BRAVO! ticket sales to date are approximately 90% of the revenue goal for the season and attendance is approximately 75% of estimate. All three BRAVO! shows in January (Imago Theatre, Tangoheart and BRAVO! Kids' Magician Louie Foxx) sold very well. Staff received enthusiastic feedback about the Tangoheart performance. Sales for the upcoming Auburn Symphony Orchestra are comparatively slower than the January shows, but steady. The BRAVO! Kids February presentation of Wonder globe: Toys and Tales to Spin the Imagination sold well and Feb. 13,2006, City of Auburn Arts Commission Meeting Minutes Page 3 of4 attendance was good, considering the stormy weather that left many residents without power earlier that day. Marketing initiatives for the final mainstage productions in April are underway, as well as the final two BRAVO! Kids' presentations in March and April. V. BRAVO! 2006/07 season Ms. Patrick presented the list of shows slated for 2006/07, including BRAVO! Kids. All events have been selected. Ms. Patrick reviewed those that have been confirmed and those that are still in negotiation. She will have the season finalized before her last day as Cultural Arts Manager. VI. Arts Day 2006: February 14 The annual, state-wide Arts Day trip to Olympia is scheduled for tomorrow, February 14. Ms. Patrick will attend along with Commissioner Nancy Colson. Ms. Patrick and Ms. Colson will meet with representatives to review various arts programs in their district, current issues and encourage continued legislative support. VII. Other Business Ms. Patrick circulated information about membership in the Washington State Arts Alliance and a survey request from Americans for the Arts. Mr. Faber announced the Cultural Arts Manager position has been posted as open and hopes to fill the position soon. Cultural Arts Coordinator Laurie Rose will manage cultural arts programming during the search. Ms. Brock thanked Ms. Patrick for her years of service with the City of Auburn and on behalf of the commission presented her with a gift, and wished her the best of luck in her new job with the City of Seattle.
