HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-09-2006 City of Auburn Arts Commission Monday, October 9, 2006, 4:30 pm Meeting Minutes Commissioners present: Herman Ansingh, Kristen Brock, Nancy Colson, Bonnie Egbert, Linda Elliott, Amanda Flannery, Don Gardner, Steve LePenske, Pam Smith Commissioners absent: Anne Baunach, Patrick Gallagher, Barbara Sharrard (Excused) Staff present: Laurie Rose, Cultural Arts Manager; Megan Myers, Cultural Arts Specialist Call to order: Commission Chair Kristen Brock called the meeting to order at 4:36 p.m. I. Approval of September Minutes Ms. Brock called for approval of the September minutes. Commissioner Linda Elliott submitted a correction regarding her attendance as excused absence. Ms. Brock asked for approval of the amended minutes reflecting the correction. Commissioner Steve LePenske moved the September minutes be approved reflecting correction. Commissioner Herman Ansingh seconded the motion. Motion approved. II. Staff Report September Month End Report BRAVO The first performance, David Scheel's Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player sold over target at nearly 300 tickets. The rest of the season has been selling very well, with a 30% increase from the 2005-2006 season. Other ticket packages are selling on target, with the 4-show ticket packages most requested. Recently, Cultural Arts Manager Laurie Rose, applied to the Washington State Arts Commission for a project support grant for the Auburn Symphony Orchestral Eileen Ivers concert in February. Public Art Projects Spokane artists Lea Ann Lake and Tom Askman will begin Phase One of the West Main project in November. Visual Arts Oil paintings by Seattle Artist Don Haggerty are currently being exhibited in the Auburn Arts Commission City Hall Gallery. The show began on September 1 and runs through Friday, November 10. The Cultural Arts Staff has received positive September 11, 2006, City of Auburn Arts Commission Meeting Minutes Page 1 of 3 feedback about this exhibition. The next show will be photography by Auburn artists Jan Wieser and John Tolbert and Shelton artist Jim Brock. 2007 Gallery The deadline for applications has been extended to November 3rd for the 2007 Gallery season. 2 portable art walls will be used to expand the City Hall Gallery program. These panels will feature a South King County Artist as "Featured Artists of the Month" in conjunction with the regular gallery exhibit. The visual arts panel will convene at the Parks, Arts & Recreation building on November 9th to review the submissions for the 2007 gallery season. Auburn Avenue Theatre The City has released a Request for Proposals (RFP) to obtain a theatre business plan consultant andlor firm. The proposal deadline is Monday, November 20. A panel will review proposals and conduct interviews. Selection of consultation will be announced in early December. Ms. Rose is submitting a grant to 4Culture for the first phase of the Auburn Avenue Theatre. III. Annual Fall Retreat The retreat will be held from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. on Monday, November 13. The speaker at this year's retreat will be Jim McDonald, former Public Art Director, City of Seattle. Public Art Program information packets were dispersed to the Arts Commissioners for review prior to the retreat. Ms. Rose reviewed the information in the packet. Discussion followed. IV. Nominating Committee ('07 Vice Chair) Mr. LePenske and Commissioner Amanda Flanery volunteered to be on the panel. Ms. Brock asked that Commissioners interested in the '07 Vice Chair position voice their interest to the Nominating Committee. V. Other Business Harvest Ball Marketing and Special Projects Manager Julie Brewer, is hosting a table at the Harvest Ball on Saturday, October 21. Commissioners are encouraged to support this event. Chamber Lunch The staff will not be promoting BRAVO on November 20 at the Chamber Lunch this year. Staff will reschedule for another date later in 2007. October 9, 2006, City of Auburn Arts Commission Meeting Minutes Page 2 of 3 Volunteers for BRAVO Ms. Rose suggested that we pursue a variety of demographics to volunteer at BRAVO performances. Possibilities include soliciting different service groups. Commissioners are encouraged to directly recruit new volunteers. December Meeting Location Mr. LePenske and Mr. Ansingh both expressed interest in hosting the Arts Commission Meeting at their private resiqences in December.
