HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-14-2007City of Auburn Arts Commission Monday, May 14, 2007, 4:30 pm Meeting Minutes Commissioners present: Herman Ansingh, Anne Baunach, Kristen Brock, Lela Brugger, Nancy Colson, Pat Gallagher, Steve LePenske, Barbara Sharrard, Councilman Rich Wagner Commissioners absent: Linda Elliot, Amanda Flanery, Tanya Rottle, Pam Smith (Excused) Staff present: Laurie Rose, Cultural Arts Manager; Megan Myers, Cultural Arts Specialist Call to order: Commissioner Kristen Brock called the meeting to order at 4:35 p.m. I. Approval of Minutes, Introductions Ms. Brock called for approval of the April minutes. Commissioner Steve LePenske moved the April minutes be approved as submitted. Commissioner Herman Ansingh seconded the motion. Motion approved. Introductions Ms. Brock introduced Director of White River Valley Museum, Patricia Cosgrove and Council Member Rich Wagner. Ms. Cosgrove introduced an upcoming exhibit featuring the artwork of 19~h century scenery painter, Abby Williams Hill that will run from May 30- September 23. The White River Valley Museum is being considered for the sustained- supportgrant. Councilman Wagner will serve as ex-officio council liaison and will attend regular Arts Commission Meetings. II. Chair's Report Washington State Arts Alliance Foundation (WSAAF)"Local Hero" award WSAAF recognizes public officials who have shown outstanding leadership in advancing the arts and arts education on local, statewide and national levels. The "Local Hero" award is for elected official who have impacted their local community. Because of councilmember Lynn Norman's tremendous work in arts advocacy over the years, Commissioner Nancy Colson will submit a nomination on behalf of the Commission. II1. Committee /Panel Reports Membership/Policy Committee Policy Updates Ms. Brock called for approval of proposed policy updates including General Bylaws, Commission Characteristics, Enabling Legislation (language clarification) and Mission/Objectives. Ms. Baunach moved that this policy be approved as submitted. Commissioner Steve LePenske seconded the motion. Ms. Brock asked for any discussion. There being no further discussion, Motion approved. May 14, 2007, City of Auburn Arts Commission Meeting Minutes Page 1 of 2 Visual Arts Committee Commissioner Steve LePenske reviewed the progress of the Visual Arts Committee. The committee intends to have a draft of the vision statement with goals and objectives to present at the next Arts Commission meeting. Public Art Committee Commissioner Pat Gallagher reported on the second convening of the Public Art Committee. The committee brainstormed ideas revolving around the question, `What is public art to Auburn? Committee is working on a vision and purpose statement. Discussion followed regarding the 2016 Plan and the creation of a 5 year rolling public art plan. Public Art Funding Options will be presented at PCD at the end of the month. IV. Staff Report BRAVO Cultural Arts Manager Laurie Rose introduced the 2007-08 BRAVO Main Stage line-up. The 2006-07 season displayed a 12% jump in attendance from last season, and a wide range of South King County residents represented. 20% of audience members had never attended a BRAVO show. Kids' BRAVO attendance was down, but staff does not believe it is an indication of a long-term trend. City Hall Gallery Veronique Le Merre and the Senior Center exhibit were successful, and were removed on May 11. Currently exhibiting in the Gallery are Dash Point artist Kathy Martin, and Auburn artist Sonja Sheppard. The reception is on May 25th from 4:30-6:00. Darel Grothaus Cemetery Art Exhibit and Reception Darel Grothaus will be exhibiting selected works from his 'Necropolis Series' at Mountain View Cemetery from May 21 -June 22. The reception with guest lecturer and nationally recognized author Shannon Applegate will take place from 4:30-7:00 on Friday, June 1. Commissioners are encouraged to attend this unique event.
