HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-01-2008 CITY OF . * UJam" RN WASHINGTON City of Auburn Arts Commission Tuesday, April 1, 2008, 4:30 pm Meeting Minutes Commissioners present: Kristen Brock, Nancy Colson, Patrick Gallagher, Leslie Moore, Tanya Rottle, Laurel Siegmund, Councilmember Rich Wagner. Commissioners absent: Lela Brugger, Linda Elliott (excused) Amanda Flanery Staff present: Laurie Rose, Cultural Arts Manager, Megan Myers, Cultural Arts Specialist Guests: Mayor Pete Lewis; Youth Programs Assistant Kjerstin Hardy, Auburn Parks, Arts & Recreation Call to order: Vice President Nancy Colson called the meeting to order at 4:35 p.m. Approval of Minutes, Introductions Due to lack of a quorum, the January minutes and the March minutes will be approved at the regular May meeting. Ms. Colson introduced guests Mayor Pete Lewis and Youth Programs Assistant Kjerstin Hardy Mayor's Report Mayor Pete Lewis updated the Arts Commission on future developments to downtown Auburn and highlighted potential for Public Art projects. Youth Council Report Ms. Hardy presented a proposal to add a youth advisor to Arts Commission. This year, a Youth Council member sat on the Parks Board which was well received, and because of this, the Youth Council is looking for other opportunities to be leaders and participate in the community. Discussion followed. The Commission will vote to add a youth advisor at its regular May meeting. Ms. Hardy requested that if the motion is passed, an Arts Commissioner be present at the May Youth Council Meeting to speak on behalf of the Arts Commission and explain the role a youth advisor would play. Elections of a Youth Council member to sit on the Arts Commission would take place on June 2nd and he/she would start on the Arts Commission in early September. II. Committee/Panel Reports Membership Committee Report Commissioner Leslie Moore reported that the Membership Committee is seeking to fill 3 vacancies on the Arts Commission and are currently collecting potential names. Commissioners were reminded to speak with candidates whose neighborhoods may be affected by the future Auburn developments, and to candidates who are representative of different neighborhoods in the city. The committee is also recruiting those interested in serving only on Commission's Public Art and Visual Art committees. April 1, 2008, City of Auburn Arts Commission Meeting Minutes Page 1 of 2 Public Art Committee Report Commissioner Pat Gallagher reported on the March 27th Community Center meeting with Heather Dwyer of 4Culture, architect Ron Harpel of BLRB Architects, landscape architect Scott Evans of Thomas V. Rengstorf Assoc, and the Community Center Committee. The purpose of this meeting was to provide information to Ms. Dwyer so that she could develop a scope of work for the Call-to-Artists. Discussion followed regarding the project scope. Councilmember Rich Wagner presented on the overall progress of the Community Center and the newly passed 1 % for Art Resolution. 1 % of the Community Center's construction budget will be spent on public artwork. Discussion followed. Visual Art Committee Report Cultural Arts Specialist Megan Myers reported on the progress of the Visual Arts Committee. The Visual Arts Committee, Staff and White River Valley Museum Staff have been working together on the first draft of the prospectus and other logistics for the Small Works Exhibit which is scheduled to take place November 19 to December 15, 2008. The first exhibit in the Auburn Avenue Theater lobby was installed. Exhibiting are photographers Stan Raucher, Ken Smith, and John Tolbert. Exhibits will rotate every 2 months. Seattle artist Greg Boudreau will exhibit his Auburn Specific Exhibit June through August 1St at Auburn Golf Course Clubhouse. A reception will be held June 20th. Mr. Boudreau is currently finishing several paintings to be used to market this special exhibit. Chair Report: 25th Anniversary Celebration Discussion Ms. Colson reviewed ideas for the 25th Anniversary put forth by the Arts Commission in past meetings. Discussion followed. Staff will create a complete list of these ideas and bring it to the commission for discussion and selection of events to pursue. III. Staff Report Ms. Rose presented the staff report concerning the performing arts. Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago performed at Auburn Performing Arts Center on March 28th as part of the 2007-2008 BRAVO season. The performance was well received by audiences and the house count was just under 400. The next BRAVO performance will be Seattle Shakespeare Company's 90 minute performance of Romeo and Juliet. This performance will tie in with the English curriculum for High School Freshman students. The BRAVO 2008-09 season has locked in three shows so far including the Shangri La Acrobats, BYU Ballroom Dance and The Wonderbread Years. Shades of Summer concerts will be on Wednesday nights this summer in July. They will no longer be a part of 'Summer Sounds and Cinema', but will stand alone. The line up includes Correo Aireo, the Texas Tallboys, Ya Boy, Casey McGill's Blue4Trio, The Senate, the Blues Brothers and ASO's Brass Ensemble. Auburn Avenue Theater is doing well and being booked with performances by Auburn Regional Theater as well as the City of Auburn.
