The members in attendance were as follows: MEMBERS PRESENT: Dick Kammeyer, Chairman; Charles A. Booth, Member, Cyril Van Selus, Member, Yvonne Yaskus, Secretary/Chief Examiner STAFF PRESENT: Police Chief Jim Kelly; Fire Chief Bob Johnson, Assistant Fire Chief Russ Vandver, Director of Hurnan Resources Brenda Heineman Chairman Kammeyer called the meeting to order at 3:32 p.m. ACTION: Approval of Minutes of FebrUary 11, 2003 Civil Service meeting The minutes were accepted as recorded. COMMISSION The Commission discussed extending the Fire Entry Level Eligibility List until such time as a new one is established. ACTION: None taken. FIRE DEPARTMENT Chief Examiner Yvonne Yaskus discussed the upcoming Fire Battalion Chief exam scheduled for April 29, 2003. There will be three separate areas of assessment: an Oral Interview, Leadership/Personnel Management, and an Incident Management exam. There are six candidates scheduled to take the exam, which will be held at Grace Community Church. Nine outside assessors have agreed to participate in this process. Chairman Kammeyer expressed his concern regarding a recent issue with the Fire Department in which he felt a Battalion Chief showed disrespect to the Civil Service Examiner. Assistant ChiefVandver assured the Commission that this matter was being addressed and appropriate measures would take place. Telephone: 253.931.3000 25 W MAIN ST * AUBURN WA * 98001-4998 FAX: 253.288.3132 Brenda Heineman informed the Commission that as a result of Assistant Chief Vandver being able to send a Fire Firefighter recruit, Gervase Henson, to the Fire Training Academy at Bates Technical College instead of the Fire Training Academy at North Bend, the City was able to save approximately $3,500 for this initial training and certification. POLICE DEPARTMENT Chief Kelly shared with t he Commission t he fact t hat after m any months, O ~cer Shumate has returned to duty from being an active Reservist, and that one other officer was still on Active Duty. The City currently has two new graduates from the Police Academy; Randy Rusness and Ja son B lake a re both n ow i n field t raining. Ja son B lake w as a recruit i n t he Academy for another City, but due to budget cuts he was let go, and we were able to hire him as a result of a retirement. As a result of hiring Jason Blake, the City was able to save about six months of a Police Officers salary based on the fact that another agency sponsored him through his training at the Police Academy.
