CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MEETING
MEETING MINUTES OF DECEMBER 9, 2003
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Civil Service Commission was held December 9 2003,
in Conference Room #2. The members in attendance were as follows:
MEMBERS PRESENT: Dick Kammeyer, Chairman; Chuck Booth, Member; Yvonne
Yaskus, Secretary/Chief Examiner
STAFF PRESENT: Police Chief Jim Kelly; Interim Fire Chief Russ Vandver
Chairman Kammeyer called the meeting to order at 3:33p.m.
ACTION:
Approval of Minutes of November 12, 2003 Civil Service meeting
The minutes were accepted as recorded.
COMMISSION
No new business.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Fire Chief Vandver informed the Commission of the provisional appointments in the Fire
Department due to the impending resignation of Chief Johnson. Mayor Lewis has named
Russ Vandver as the Interim Fire Chief. Mike Gerber has been appointed to Interim Assistant
Fire Chief, with Kevin O'Brien and Gary Soderquist provisionally appointed to Battalion
Chief and Fire Captain, respectively. The appointments to Battalion Chief and Captain will
be for a minimum of four months.
Officials of both Auburn and Kent Fire Department's are discussing a potential merger of
operations.
ACTION:
A motion was made and carried to approve the provisional appointments to Assistant Fire
Chief, Battalion Chief and Captain.

POLICE DEPARTMENT
The Police Chief discussed that we are in the process of backgrounding entry level candidates
for the vacant positions. There are three lateral entry candidates that will be tested, and those
candidates, combined with the entry-level applicants, will be considered for the vacancies.
Officer Andy Gould is still on active duty in the military, and his date of return is unknown.
Officer Jack Pennington has resigned; he went to work for the Port of Seattle. Officer Hans
Krenz has been named the Assistant Commander as the Washington State Criminal Justice
Training Commission. There are also two new positions that have been approved in the 2004
budget.
ACTION:
None.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 3:40 p.m.
