CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MEETING
MEETING MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 10, 2004
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Civil Service Commission was held February 10,
2004, in Conference Room 2 located on the second floor of Auburn City Hall, 25 West Main
Street, Auburn, WA. The following members were in attendance.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Dick Kammeyer, Chairman; Cyril Van Selus, Member; Marilyn
Beeksma, Secretary/Chief Examiner Pro Tem.
STAFF PRESENT: Police Chief Jim Kelly; Interim Fire Chief Russ Vandver, Dan Heid,
City Attorney, John Fletcher, Employee Relations and Compensation Manager.
GUESTS: Christopher Langhelm and Patrick Mitchell
Chairman Kammeyercalled the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m.
ACTION:
Approval of January 13, 2004, Civil Service meeting minutes.
Minutes were accepted as written.
COMMISSION
No items for discussion.
POLICE DEPARTMENT
Chief Kelly updated hiring within the police department. Kelly stated they had hired 3
new police officers, one a lateral from the City of Milton, Michael Hauser who starts
FTO this Friday, February 14. Entry Level police officer Ryan Pryor and Molly
Cameron will work in station until the Academy starts April 29th.
Kelly distributed an informational 2003-2004 Goals Report to the Commission.
No action required. If the Commission has any questions they will discussed at the
next meeting.
AUBURN, MORE THAN YOU IMAGINED
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Chief Vandver presented the Commission updated drafts of job descriptions for
Firefighter/EMT and Fire Captain for review. Vandver will present finalized job
descriptions at the next meeting for final approval. John Fletcher stated the job
descriptions are old and out of date as the reason for the updates.
No Action taken, Commission will review job descriptions.
Vandver stated the Fire Captain eligibility list will expire in May and would like a new
list prepared. He will coordinate with the Chief Examiner for testing.
Vandver moved to extend Firefighter Entry Level eligibility list, which expires in
February for 6 months. Firefighter Entry Level Eligibility List extended for 6 months
to August 2004. Commission voted 3-0 to extend.
APPEALS:
The Commission then went into a closed session for quasi-judicial matters at 3:45 p.m. to hear
(appeals from Patrick Mitchell and Christopher Langhelm regarding removal from the Entry
Level Police Officer Eligibility List). The Commission discussed the issues and concluded
that the basis for removal was proper and affirmed' both.
ADJOURNMENT:
There being no further business to come before the Commission, the meeting adjourned at
4:51 p.m.
