Lewis, Mayor 25 West Main Street * Auburn WA 98001-4998, www.ci.auburn.wa.us, 253-931-3000 CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MEETING Meeting Minutes of March g, 2004 The regularly scheduled meeting of the Civil Service Commission was held March 9, 2004, in the Council Conference room located on the first floor of Auburn City Hall, 25 West Main Street, Auburn, WA. The following members were in attendance. MEMBERS PRESENT: Dick Kammeyer, Chairman; Charles Booth, Member; Gail Solberg, Secretary/Chief Examiner. STAFF PRESENT: Police Chief Jim Kelly; Interim Fire Chief Russ Vandver, Brenda Heineman, Director of Human Resources; Marilyn Beeksma, HR Assistant. GUESTS: none Chairman Kammeyer called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m. ACTION: Approval of February 10, 2004 Civil Service meeting minutes Minutes were accepted as wdtten. COMMISSION Cyril Van Selus absent due to vacation. POLICE DEPARTMENT Chief Kelly mentioned that two new police officers, Ryan Pryor and Molly Cameron, were able to get into the Academy and started today (approximately 6 weeks earlier than expected). Brenda Heineman mentioned that out of the 40 entry level police candidates,. 33 are interested in continuing with the recruiting process. Also that Gail is working with Will Lathrop at the Police Department to look at our entry level hiring process and the possibility of incorporating a self-assessment questionnaire up front (prior to oral interviews). Once the new process is defined, we will put it through our own legal review. We hope to have something established by May. When the process is complete, Dick Kammeyer asked that it be sent out to the Commission for review. Gail Solberg stated that we have 7 candidates for the lateral police interviews scheduled for 3/23. AUBURN, MOKE THAN YOU IMAGINED FIRE DEPARTMENT Chief Vandver presented the commission with the final recommendation for the Fire Captain job description (see attached). Changes were accepted as submitted. Brenda Heineman stated that the Department of L&I has been focusing on job descriptions to ensure they match current responsibilities. Dick Kammeyer asked both Chief Vandver and Brenda Heinemen if they've reviewed the proposed job description for Fire Captain and both acknowledged that they have reviewed it and it is accurate. Charles Booth moved that we adopt the job description as submitted pending legal review as appropriate. Dick Kammeyer seconded. Chief Vandver stated that the EMT job description is still in the development stages and should be ready for review next month. Chief Vandver gave an update on the L&I inspection stating that it is almost complete. He and Mike Gerber were interviewed last week and they are finalizing the post incident analysis; once complete a copy will be sent to L&I who will issue any findings. Chief Vandver also mentioned they are.almost through with remodel at station #31 and extended an invitation to stop by and see the final remodel. Outstanding Firefighter of the year was Deputy Fire Marshal Mike Lee. Fire Officer of the Year was Captain Norm Golden. The Fire Captains test has been scheduled for May 10th and 11th. APPEALS: None.
