CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MEETING
Meeting Minutes of May 11,2004
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Civil Service Commission was held May 11,
2004, in the Resource 2 conference room located on the second floor of Auburn City
Hall, 25 West Main Street, Auburn, WA. The following members were in attendance.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Dick Kammeyer, Chairman; Charles Booth, Member
STAFF PRESENT: Police Chief Jim Kelly; Employee Relations & Compensation
Manager, John Fletcher; Associate City Attorney, Joe Beck
GUESTS: none
Chairman Kammeyer called the meeting to order at 3:32 p.m.
ACTION:
Approval of April 13, 2004 Civil Service meeting minutes.
Minutes were accepted as written.
COMMISSION
Gail Solberg, Secretary/Chief Examiner absent; John Fletcher, Compensation Manager
attended in her absence.
POLICE DEPARTMENT
Entry-level Police interviews have been completed (interviewed 21 Candidates).
Scoring will take place next week then we will submit the results letter to the Civil
Service Commission.
Lateral Police interviews have been scored and conditional offers sent to the
candidates. We are waiting for their Personal Background History statements to return.
Chief Kelly stated that next month we will start discussions on the Sergeant,
Commander, and Assistant Police Chief eligibility lists - all expire in August this year.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Fire Captain's testing is in progress during this meeting. John Fletcher reported that the
testing process is going smoothly and should be complete around 5:30 today (May
11th); then candidates will have 5 days to review their scores and Qualitative
Evaluations and submit any grievances. John stated that 15 Firefighters took the
Captain's test.
Fire Department job descriptions will be reviewed next month (Russ was unable to
attend the meeting due to a fire in progress).
AUBURN, THAN YOU IMAGINED
There was a discussion about whether the Fire Chief position is covered under Civil
Service. Dick stated that right now it is covered under Civil Service but he believes the
intention is to change that in the future.
