Lewis, Mayor 25 West Main Street * Auburn WA 98001-4998 * www.ci.auburn.wa.us * 253-931-3000 CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MEETING Meeting Minutes of July 13, 2004 The regularly scheduled meeting of the Civil Service Commission was held July 13, 2004, in the Resource 2 conference room located on the second floor of Auburn City Hall, 25 West Main Street, Auburn, WA. The following members were in attendance. MEMBERS PRESENT: Dick Kammeyer, Chairman; Chuck Booth , Member; Gail Solberg, Secretary/Chief Examiner STAFF PRESENT: Police Chief Jim Kelly; Fire Chief Russ Vandver; Associate City Attorney, Joe Beck GUESTS: none Chairman Kammeyer called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m. ACTION: Approval of June 8, 2004 Civil Service meeting minutes. Minutes were accepted as written. COMMISSION POLICE DEPARTMENT Five lateral Police candidates are in the testing process; 2 are in the final testing process, 3 are in the background investigation process. Three entry-level Police candidates are also in the background investigation process. The eligibility list for Sergeant, Commander, and Assistant Chief all expire in August. The Commission has already extended the lists for an additional year. We have started the initial planning process for the Sergeants test; each 3 testing elements are currently in the development stage. We're targeting September 16th and 1 ih for conducting the exam. The Commander exam will be held some time the month following the Sergeant exam. The Sergeants test will expire August 1 S\ Commander will expire August 15th; Assistant Chief will expire August 23fd. Chairman Kammeyer motioned to extend the lists until the exams are complete. There were no objections; Chuck Booth seconded the motion. Motion was approved. AUBURN * MORE THAN YOU IMAGINED FIRE DEPARTMENT Congratulations Russ Vandver on his promotion to Fire Chief. An updated Fire Fighter / EMT job description was presented to the Commission. Chief Vandver stated that the job description has been sent to the Executive Board for review. No objections to the new job description. Position description accepted as outlined. Chief Vandver, Interim Assistant Chief Gerber, a union representative, and a safety training representative interviewed the top 5 candidates on the entry-level Firefighter list. All 5 candidates were very impressive. They are currently being scheduled for the background testing process. Chief Vandver stated that Captain Kevin O'Brian is in the final testing process for the Orcas Island Fire Chief position. We are currently looking at coordinating an Assistant Fire Chiefs test in September. We are looking at the job description and will be working on updates for the August Civil Service Commission meeting. APPEALS: None.
