CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MEETING
Meeting Minutes of May 9, 2006
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Civil Service Commission was held May 9,
2006, in Resource Room #2 located on the second floor of Auburn City Hall, 25 West
Main Street, Auburn, WA. The following members were in attendance.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Dick Kammeyer, Chairman; Charles Booth, Member; Cyril Van
Selus, Member
STAFF PRESENT: Chief of Public Safety Jim Kelly; Assistant Fire Chief Stan Laatsch;
Joe Beck, Assistant City Attorney; and Gail Solberg, Civil Service Examiner
GUESTS: Sean Robertson
ACTION:
Chairman Kammeyer called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m.
Approval of April 11 , 2006 Civil Service meeting minutes.
Minutes were accepted as written.
COMMISSION
POLICE DEPARTMENT
Solberg reported that we held the Assistant Police Chief exam in April, 2006. We
originally had 3 candidates; 1 candidate backed out prior to testing. The two
candidates who participated in the process both passed and establish our new
Assistant Police Chief list. Booth motioned to accept the list; Van Selus seconded;
motion was carried.
Chief Kelly reported that we have our entry-level test scheduled for this Saturday, May
13, 2006 at Riverside High School. We received 77 applicants to participate in the
written test.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Solberg reported the Fire Captain exam is scheduled for May 23rd and 24th. We have
18 candidates; testing 9 candidates each day. It will take place at Grace Community
Church. We have secured 9 outside assessors and will have 3 test elements plus a
written exam.
Chief Kelly reported we have made a temporary assignment for a Battalion Chief to
work on upcoming Fire department projects; the temporary appointment was filled by
Captain Day.

Solberg reported the entry-level firefighters list expires in June, 2006. Originally it was
established in December, 2005. Booth motioned for the extension of the list for another
six months; Van Selus seconded; motion was carried.
APPEALS
The appeal for police applicant Sean Robertson was heard. Based on the information
presented by the applicants and staff the Commission voted to deny his appeal. The
Commission sustained the decision of the Civil Service Secretary/Chief Examiner to
remove the candidate from the Lateral Level Police Officer Eligibility List.
ADJOURNMENT:
There being no further business to come before the Commission, the meeting
adjourned at 4:30 p.m.
