Lewis, Mayor 25 West Main Street * Auburn WA 98001-4998 * www.auburnwa.gov * 253-931-3000 CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MEETING Meeting Minutes of June 13, 2006 The regularly scheduled meeting of the Civil Service Commission was held June 13, 2006, in Resource Room #2 located on the second floor of Auburn City Hall, 25 West Main Street, Auburn, WA. The following members were in attendance. MEMBERS PRESENT: Dick Kammeyer, Chairman; Charles Booth, Member; Cyril Van Selus, Member STAFF PRESENT: Chief of Public Safety Jim Kelly; Joe Beck, Assistant City Attorney; and Gail Solberg, Civil Service Examiner ACTION: Chairman Kammeyer called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m. Approval of May 9,2006 Civil Service meeting minutes. Minutes were accepted as written. COMMISSION POLICE DEPARTMENT Gail Solberg reported that the written exam for the entry-level police was conducted on May 13, 2006. We had 67 participants in the written exam and are scheduling oral boards for the top 40 for June 20, 21, and 22, 2006. Approximately 50 candidates received a passing score on the written exam. There was discussion about the decline in the number of candidates for entry-level police positions. Chief Kelly reported that it's not just an issue within Auburn but that many surrounding agencies are having the same problem. FIRE DEPARTMENT Solberg reported that the Fire Captain exam was conducted on May 23 and 24, 2006. It was conducted in a fair and equitable manner. Chief Kelly stated that one individual filed a grievance however he did not file it in the proper manner, therefore the union was granted an additional 5 days to determine whether or not they wanted to grieve the test. The union submitted a formal grievance within the 5 day period; however as of June 13, 2006, they officially withdrew their grievance. Booth motioned to accept the new Fire Captains list, Van Selus seconded; the motion was ca'rried. AUBURN * MORE THAN YOU IMAGINED , . Chief Kelly discussed the temporary appointment of Gary Barker to Captain. He explained that they will be looking at the current Captain's list for making the official promotion to Captain (utilizing the rule of 3).
